Favorite knife you bought in 2018

The "favorite" knife that I bought in 2018, is a "Favorite" because for a "small" amount, it taught me a "LARGE" lesson! I won't post a picture of it. It looks just "Beautiful", but it's construction, and functions leave a lot to be desired, and since it's razor sharp, it isn't really safe to use. It came with a wood case, that after I refinished it , is now worth more than the knife. - Every thing considered, the lesson is "Priceless".

I'd have to say mine is this American Shear whittler that I picked up for a few bucks at a pawnshop. It has had a lot of rust on it, note the pitting, but the blades are full for a knife so old, pre 1911? An old knife like this is just full of character.

Jim, that knife is just beautiful! You can't always say that about old people, although I was looking at my Sweetheart this morning, and I did like what I saw. We both have a little pitting and some stiff joints that oil won't cure.

I got my sheath back from Ron Skaggs. He did a WOOLLY MAMMOTH for my sheath. Tim Withers did a great job of setting up the sheath for Ron, and then Ron hit it out of the park. They both turned my idea for the sheath into a really cool thing.

Soo.. This yr I bought 23 knives (45 last yr) and just pulled the trigger on a LTWK GNS FB.. But probably wont get it till after the 1st.. Does that still count??? If not I gotta look at the other 22 and pick one!!

Wally, Yor are killing me. Who made the knife? It’s gorgeous. The sheath is incredible, but that ivory handled beauty is just magnificent.

Sharp, Tim Withers made the knife and the sheath. He's incredible. His soldering is so clean this knife looks like one piece of steel.
And he's a part-time knifemaker! His real job is being a great plumbing contractor.
He is going to start making folders later this Winter, and I'm first in line, or close to it. I know Ron from way back, and Dave Nittinger introduced Tim and I. If You want to see more of his beautiful work, his website is Withers Knives. He's a really great guy.

Thanks Doc! All I did was picture what it would look like. Tim and Ron made a really cool, unusual piece out of a few pieces of leather and a chunk of Ivory. I don't know whether to spend time looking at the knife, or looking at the sheath!

That knife design looks familiar, is that a Bob Loveless design by any chance?

Sharp-Yes, it's a take on the Loveless Chute Knife. Tim really has the lines nailed. I had him leave the lanyard hole out, and it has the half guard, which I really like. Sometimes less is more. It was just luck that I connected with Tim when I did. His plumbing business had him tied up, so he wasn't taking any orders.
Then he sent me an email about a blade he had made for another guy, and the buyer just disappeared. This blade was just laying in a drawer. So I bought the knife scales, and he worked on it when he had time. I just left him alone and figured, if it takes a year, I'll just wait and let it happen. Actually, it was only a few months,so I was surprised that I got the knife so quickly.
He isn't taking orders, but if You ask him to put you on his "If I ever get around to it" list, he may get to it.
Both Tim and Ron went over and above what I asked them to do. They know what they're doing, and the details are always really cool. Tim put the Red Liner behind the Ivory, and that just floored me. Ron put a border around the Mammoth, and he had the tusks and trunk run outside of the border. Stuff like that is just cool. Good artists always amaze me, and Tim and Ron are just really into anything that they're working on. They add whatever they think is cool, and it always is.
Do a search, "Tim Withers Instagram". You'll get to see a lot of his knives, and he has like 1270 followers! My knife is on the first page that You'll see. He has quite a few videos on there. Definitely check out the Instagram, and You'll have fun seeing what Tim can do, and his shop is pretty cool.

I way overspent this year. I bought 4 Randall’s in 2018 telling myself I’d pick a favorite and sell the others. I still haven’t picked a favorite and I’ve only sold one off. Thinking they may be my retirement fund. Lol!

I saw an 1800's Cattaraugus Congress in mint condition for around $350. I definitely thought about it, but Tim may have a folder made for me around March, and I have to save my knife money. They really made them right back then. Who made that folder of Yours?
