When we were moving out of that house, which had three rented rooms in the basement, I lost my knife. I’m pretty sure that I handed it to a guy named Al to cut down a box. We never went back and I never saw the knife again. I did see Al a few times over the years, most recently maybe a couple of years ago. He doesn’t remember it. Al had a pretty harsh life, on the streets and having substance issues. He in no way resembles the chubby and healthy 18 year old I still have a pic of.
My hope is that the knife may still be floating around Vancouver. I know, very slight chance, but most people who are down wouldn’t throw away something they can still use.
The knife is a three blade, clip, sheepsfoot and a very small and narrow pen blade. The handles are bark bone. One side is missing the scale and it was replaced with a strip of reddish brown suede, glued on. It has a shield, brass, I think. I’m pretty sure ‘Premium Stock’ was on it and I sort of think it was on the tang rather than the blade. I think it said ‘Sheffield’ too.
The thing is, that was Dad’s knife and I’d had it since I was a kid. I carried it everywhere. I really loved it. When I was very young, I would ask to take it out and use it to carve and ‘camp’ in the backyard. When my parents had a property in Surrey that they were clearing, I spent weeks hacking a one poor sapling until I finally cut it down. I couldn’t have been more than seven. Dad finally stopped asking for it back and it seldom left my pocket.

Pretty slim hope, I know. My hope is that it’s sitting in a pile of old junkers somewhere. I do check all the local swaps. Of course it likely fell down a sewer in 1991! Ya just never know, though, so can you all kindly keep an eye out if you’re anywhere near?
