DOTS?

The photo of the Case 62048 SP clearly(Not so clearly) shows that it is a 10 dot. There are 4 dots after the A in USA in the Tang Marking.

On the 6254 SSP, The Bolster covers the Dots, and I can only see nine for certain, but really cannot count the dots. There are 4 dots from the A in the USA also. Does anyone have anyway I can tell if this is a nine or ten dot 6254?

Hi Dave,
The first thing we need to establish is that a 10 dot has it's row of dots the same width as the widest part of the stamp. If your knife is definitly showing 9 dots and you can see the dots being present all the way to the right side, then your attention should be focused to the far left, because the far left dot is the first one removed(70's). If you can see where the far left dot should be, but it's not there-you have a 9 dot. If the area where the far left dot is hidden then there is no way to tell if it's 9 dot or 10 dot outside of pulling the blade out. I can't tell anything from your pictures.

by enlarging and looking at the last picture you posted, i can count 6 dots, from left to right, with the last dot i can see, looking to be squarely under the A in usa. i have a 10 dot where you can see all the dots at once, and i just compared it to mine, and on mine, it counts 7 dots from left to right with my 7th dot being where the 6th dot on yours is, under the A in usa, so i would assume it is a 9 dot. perhaps if you open the blade to a 45 degree position, you might be able to tell for sure, how many dots are to the right of the dot under the A in usa. anyway, hope this helps.

I took it to a jeweler with a higher powered glass than I have, and he figured it was a nine dot also. We had to clean up the tang a little, that also helped. Thanks for your help and interest.
