I used to imagine being a lite sleeper and the sound of the old 12 ga racking in the dark making a midnight prowler's bowels loosen up. Oh the slippin' and slidin' but then there's the mess to clean up.

Big H, I keep the old Shockwave loaded with Winchester Super X 4 shot, looks just like your box of OO.

Finally able to get to the range and try out the Smith and Wesson SD9
First few shots a bit low then it settled in for some good groups.
Trigger was smooth but a bit heavy, overall a great gun.

Jerry's post mentioning the "racking of a pump gun" reminded me of a friend from years ago who was a deputy sheriff. He was relaying some incidents to some fellers one day and was commenting on how effective that sound was when they would be called to a juke joint or a dive that was having trouble. Walk through the door, rack the pump, everything gets real quite. Then he said they would turn their back or go out side for a minute and then make a sweep through the place. He may have exaggerated a bit when he said you could hear the knives and Saturday night specials hitting the wood floor. Walk back in and ask, "Is this yours?" Response, "No sir, I ain't never seen that before!" Several of those boys had baskets full of weapons they just happened to find on the floor thanks to the sound of a 12 gauge pump being loaded. ::shrug::

Yeah, I always figured an intruder sneaking around in a strange, dark house around midnight or after would slip and slide on his own shirt at the sound of that old pump gun racking a shell into the chamber.

I once had an old and beautiful near mint Winchester Model 12 (I think that's correct) WWI trench/riot gun, complete with bayonet lug.

12 gauge, of course.

Oh, how I wish now that I still had it.

My old M88 shoots right well with its favorite handload (308 WIN,165 grain Hornady Interlock and IMR4064) - always stays under 1-1/8" with a clean barrel, just gets tighter with a fouled barrel. Shot a confirming group a few weeks ago, 5/8" at 100 yards is pretty good for a 55 year old levergun. OH

Yep, a model 12 was used by the military for "trench guns" and so was the model '97....
I love the model '97 because of the external hammer..... I don't have one with the bayonet lug but here is one of my model 97's....

Sorry for the poor pics..... all close-up.

Big Homer, I have that exact same shotgun - Winchester 1200 Defender - living in the corner of my bedroom, loaded with the same load, "00" buckshot.

This thread is getting all cluttered up with Winchesters. I guess it falls to me to class it up a bit with some JM Marlins and Ithacas. (There are a couple of off brands, Remington and a Stevens but we don’t talk about them in polite society).

Bruce, that ol 88 really is nice!

Mike, no flies on the 97 either.

Heres my Marlin 120. It became a shorty, soon after getting home. It looked funny with the Cutts. note the forearm repair and Christmas lights. Your group is a fine family pic

I love the old shotguns with the external hammers..... After seeing the Winchester model '97, I just needed to know if there were any other makers of the external hammer design...... Yep there was.

I found out that Marlin made one. This here is my Marlin model 19-G.

Thanks guys. I’ve put together a “set” of Ithaca 37’s for each boy all from a single year. Well, mostly. The oldest boy has a 12, 16, and 20 from 1953. The middle has a 16, and 20 from 1948 (I need to find a 12). The youngest has a 20 from 1952 (I need the 12 and 16). The rest are mine.

I have a sickness.

OH, my dad has been giving some of his guns to the grandkids. He gave my oldest boy a modified choked round knob A5 standard 16 gauge. I knew you’d approve. He can shoot that thing too. I’ve indoctrinated the oldest two well. They both think the 16 is the king of shotguns.
