I know I've probably posted these before but as long as we're doin' butter beans (the life rafts of the canoe world) I figured I'd post 'em here. These are some of my favorites...

Sasquach (et al.), Don't mean this to detract from a slew of good pictures this morning, but that second butterbean, the one with bone scales with no bolsters that you posted, I really like that one. Real good.

Case calls it "Shadow Bone". The one I posted is autumn and the sibling posted below is Hunter Green Shadow Bone. They are the only two versions Case has made that I'm aware of.geocash wrote:Sasquach (et al.), Don't mean this to detract from a slew of good pictures this morning, but that second butterbean, the one with bone scales with no bolsters that you posted, I really like that one. I was posting on another thread and got yelled at for not being on the canoe thread!
Seems I've established a reputation here.
So here I am with a new addition to post. This is another one of those Chinese imports that is of surprisingly good quality. I picked it up at a local flea market this morning for few bucks. I've always been a sucker for synthetic yellow handles.

I'm a self proclaimed canoe ca-nut so the heart of my collection is canoes........buuuut......I am a knife nut too and my collection goes beyond just the canoe pattern. I like trappers, peanuts, saddle horns, English jacks, sod busters, fixed blades, scouts, folding hunters, equal end / cigar jacks, tear drop jacks, SAKs, multitools, hatchets, axes, swords, cleavers, and being broke!royal0014 wrote:Sasquach wrote:I was posting on another thread and got yelled at for not being on the canoe thread!Seems I've established a reputation here.

Shoot, I even like sharp rocks! This one isn't a canoe but one like it was probably used to make a canoe.

Re: DO YOU........................CANOE ?
I finally get to contribute to the canoe thread
... here's probably the best deal I ever got on eBay - really fine knife with no flaws whatsoever:
I'd love to hear reasons why guys love the canoe pattern. I never particularly liked the looks of it, but once I got a few, they really grew on me. For me, there are 2 main reasons why I have come to love the canoe:
1. The "slimness" of the knife - I never knew how thin a full size canoe was until I held one - they practically disappear in the pocket.
2. The "beefiness" of the secondary blade. I can't stand pen (eisenhauer) or small jack (gunstocks or half whittlers) knives that have a tiny or too thin secondary blade (can't mount it in my beloved Lansky vice). Its a rare bird that has a secondary blade with some meat to it ... I find I use the secondary far more than the primary blade on a canoe.

Re: DO YOU........................CANOE ?
Excellent grey bone canoe Lansky!!!

The Reasons that I like the canoe pattern are:
1.) They are so pocket friendly with no sharp edges or corners.
2.) They are such a traditional pattern. They've been around since the late 1800s. My Granddad carried one and my first pocket knife was a canoe.
3.) I've always been a fan of the spear blade for a small utility knife. The pen or secondary blade is a bonus for me.
4.) I have large hands and the canoe pattern seems easier to handle than other patterns of that size.
So, there you have it......why I love canoes.

Re: DO YOU........................CANOE ?
I came close to pulling the trigger on that Case gray bone. All of the reasons you fellas listed are persuasive. Although I had the odd Canoe in my accumulation I never paid any attention to them. Then one day I noticed Charlie's impressive knives. By day two I was hooked. I have started carrying a Canoe for edc sometimes and it is as ideal as you both describe.

Re: DO YOU........................CANOE ?
I can relate to all those reasons ... just curious, do you happen to have your Gramps canoe ? I'm fortunate to have my Gramps pocket knife that he carried all his life (he bought it for a nickel when he was a boy, it's nothing special from a collectors perspective, but that knife has special meaning ... in fact, after he died, my dad went over to the house and retrieved that knife - it was the only possession of my gramps that he wanted)Sasquach wrote:Excellent grey bone canoe Lansky!!!![]()

Re: DO YOU........................CANOE ?
I have several of my Granddads' knives, including his "Sunday go to meeting" knife which is an equal end ebony jack made by Miller Bros. but unfortunately I don't have that canoe and don't know what became of it. I was about 5 or 6 thousand miles from home when my Granddad passed away and wasn't able to get home right away. My sisters saved a lot of his things for me but there were a couple of things that were important to me that weren't among them. That's okay though, the memories and lessons he gave me are the most important things of all.Lansky1 wrote:I can relate to all those reasons ... just curious, do you happen to have your Gramps canoe ? Lansky, I didn't want to post anymore non-canoe knives here (I'm guilty of having done so once or twice) so I posted a pic on the knife photography thread on page 466.
