Generally, I prefer stag handles to be as uncluttered as possible...after all, the stag is "the show" and you can always find out the knife brand from the tang stamp. But, I also like knives that are different, unusual or have unique spins on the traditional styles. So, in the case of the burned-on logo, I've grown to appreciate it just for the fact that it's different from a standard shield or no shield at all. If nothing else, it gives my Stag Mini Trapper collection a bit more variety, and variety is usually more interesting than uniformity....although it would be difficult to imagine a collection of Stag handled knives that were all completely uniform (except for the Stag used on Hen & Rooster knives, which all looks basically the same to me).

DAY 55

Took me awhile to figure out why OCD Mini Trapper Monkey was all excited this morning...then it dawned on me, of course, it's Thursday, which to OCD Monkey is actually Threesday--the day he gets to break the One-Knife-Per-Day rule simply by mispronouncing the day of the week (such a clever little Monkey!). Well, he's done it before and gotten away with it (nobody complained or held him accountable), so I guess a precedent has been set. But, since he was successful at subverting the rules before, the OCD Monkey is going to push it just a little further today (as monkeys are wont to do) and see if he can get away with interpreting the rules in such a way that he can post even more Mini Trappers while still technically remaining within the confines of the rules.

That being said, today's first Mini TraPPER DIEM is this triad, trio, trifecta, triumvirate or trinity (all singular nouns, so only counting as one entry) of 1st Issue Honey Bone Wharncliffe Mini Trappers:

The second Mini TrapPER DIEM entry is closely related to the first set (notice, another singular noun used to describe the three previous knives...devious little Monkey!), but this one is a Green Bone 1st Issue Wharncliffe Mini Trapper:

And, finally, the full weight of the Mini Trapper Monkey's OCD is revealed with this entry--which, you may notice, is very similar to the Stag Rancher Mini Trapper posted yesterday, thus keeping similar knives all closely grouped together in a well-ordered, nicely organized manner...exactly how OCD Mini Trapper Monkey likes everything to be.

So, once again, it appears the OCD Monkey has managed to find a loophole that allows him to seemingly break a rule while actually following it. I'll let you be the judge.

He had not...until now. And the OCD Mini Trapper Monkey is not only highly susceptible to suggestion (particularly when put in alliterative form), he is also a very vain little beast who loves to perform, especially when he knows he has an audience watching.

So, thanks, Joe...now, it seems you may have not only incited the Monkey to show off, but you may have also unwittingly set a new precedent for the Friday Mini TrapPER DIEM presentations henceforth and forthwith.

Oh well, rules were made to be broken, and since no one else is posting their Mini Ts, I guess it wouldn't hurt to relax the rules just this once and allow the Mini Trapper Monkey to post four knives instead of only one under the Friday Fantastic Foursome Finale exception as per the suggestion of a loyal member of the viewing audience.

And what a great audience you are! I'll be here all evening so let's keep this party rolling. Apparently, the Monkey is taking requests now in the bandstand and he's eager to dance.

BLACK & ORANGE is the Mini TrapPER DIEM theme-Of-The-Week this week in honor of Halloween.

My Mini TrapPER DIEM presentation for today has both black and orange; so, that should help get us off to a solid start.

I can't decide if this Mini Trapper would be my ticket to being accepted by an outlaw biker gang, or if it would lead to some kind of ridicule or possibly even outright violence against me were I to pull it out and show it off in a hardcore Harley biker bar in Sturgis, South Dakota.

I agree with jerryd...that is a beautiful Mini T, indeed, John. In fact, you may or may not recall that it was only after seeing yours in the Ode To The 07 thread, and by your recommendation (and you sending me the link to the dealer's website) that I decided to get one just like it for myself. I was slightly hesitant at first because at that time I was still somewhat ambivalent about orange handles. But, the Wharncliffe blade and the EZO features were sufficient reasons on their own to convince me to take the plunge and I'm so glad I did. Since then, I have come to really like and appreciate orange handles like I never did before.

Here's mine...the one you inspired me to get which essentially changed my whole attitude about orange handled knives:

DAY 58

Wow, it's already Sunday again..where does the time go? Is it just me or is it true that that the older one gets, the faster time seems to pass by? I remember when I was a child, a year seemed like an eternity...think about how long it was from one Christmas to the next, for example. Now, however, I'm constantly asking my wife if it's really been a whole year since some event took place. Even worse is when it's been more than one year and it still seems like it just barely happened; this is particularly true with friends who have died. When I moved to Hawaii in 2003, I didn't have any grandchildren. Now, I have two...and they're already teenagers for goodness sake! How did that happen so quickly? Was I taking a Rip Van Winkle nap, or was there a shift in the space-time continuum while I was sleeping, or something?

And don't even get me started on technology. Whaddya mean my computer is a "dinosaur"? I just barely bought the darn thing and figured out how to use the "new" operating system. But that was nearly nine whole years ago...and in the ever-changing world of tech, it may as well be the stone age (at least that's according to the pimply-faced youth at the computer repair shop who was still in diapers when I bought my computer but who's most likely already forgotten more than I ever knew or will ever know about troubleshooting computer problems).

Maybe that explains why I am so drawn to collecting knives; they have a certain air of immutable permanence about them that I find very reassuring. Oh, I realize that even a knife can change...especially if it's a daily user (EDC). Heck, even some knives that are never used can change to some degree depending on the materials they're made of and the environmental conditions in which they're stored (think celluloid outgassing and 1095 steel stored in a humid tropical climate zone, for example). But, generally speaking, knives have an enduring quality that transcends our perception of the passage of time; a well-taken-care-of one hundred plus year old knife can look just as good and function just as well as any modern knife...and in many (possibly even most) cases even better, on both counts. In fact, it's common nowadays in our "disposable economy" for antique or vintage knives to be more highly valued and much better constructed than almost any contemporary, recently made knife (with the exception of certain handmade custom knives, of course).

Well, I admit, the vast majority of the knives in my collection are neither antique nor even vintage; in fact, almost all of them are significantly younger even than I am. But, when I look at them, and especially when I hold them, I can't help but feel my knives will still be around looking good and working perfectly for many years after I'm dead and gone and long-forgotten. For some reason that feeling tends to give me a sense of comfort and satisfaction.

For today's Mini TrapPER DIEM I'm continuing with this week's Halloween colors theme of Black & Orange handled knives. Although, I have to admit that, even though technically it is orange, the bright, sunny, cheerful color of the Tangerine Bone on this Case 6207 hardly suggests anything remotely associated with my concept of Halloween...but, it is orange, so it qualifies nevertheless.

There is a meme that says something to the effect: "You know you're getting old when you think the "90's were only 10 years ago". I will post a crappy picture of my only mini trappers, a normal Case jigged amber bone, and a Carhartt single wharncliffe. I really must add to them. Oh and please disregard the abomination at the top.
