Colonial prov USA Fish knife

Found this guy, crazy cheap, colonial fish-knife. Seems to have a little age to it. Discription said 50s-60s. I can't find a single blade fish knife anywhere, they all have the second scaler blade. Anyone know anything about it?

That is because it isn't a fish knife;it's called a Tickler. They do make single blade fish knives in that pattern but the back of the blade is a scaler. 1950's and up is a good idea of age.

It says fish knife on the shield, thats why i referred to it as a fish knife. Other than the name, there is no indication it is what it says.

My guess would be, it's either a factory mistake, or more likely someone has taken it apart and removed the scaler to make it more pocket friendly. Shell handles are pretty easy to do that to, without leaving much of a trace.

I'm gonna throw out another possibility, someone may have not like the fish scaler and filed or ground it down. It may the angle of the picture but that nail nick looks awfully close to top of the blade, just saying.

Upon re-visiting the picture of the original post I can see that the shield says something but it is too blurry for my eyes. I have never seen a fish knife so marked without either the scaler on the spine of the blade or a separate one with hook disgorger. I know that any knife is capable of being a fish knife but this particular pattern I have always heard referred to a a tickler. I have several of these knives marked ,"fish knife";both one and two blade and the single blade versions all have the scaler on the spine. The single blades without the scaler have no shield for the most part.

Definately a neat little knife. A little scrub and some oil and I'm really glad i picked it up, especially cheap. Thanks for all the info, I'm for sure gonna be on the look out for more of them

this was a 2 blade fish knife. scaler was removed.blade ground to a tooth pick.
scales replaced with sheep horn. it is one of my favourite knives
