Buck 501 Question

Hoyt Buck produced the first Buck Knife in 1902. Hoyt and his son Al moved to San Diego and set up shop as H.H. Buck & Son in 1947. Al Buck revolutionized the knife industry in 1964 with the infamous Model 110 Folding Hunter. The company's innovative history and attention to quality have made for many great collectible knives.

Buck 501 Question

I don't collect Buck knives - this 501 came to me as part of a group of knives and before I tossed it into the drawer of "other knives" I decided to look it up first and noticed that every other 501 I see has 2 pins. So now I'm curious why this one has 3? ::hmm::

Very early (first) variation of the Buck 501 Esquire - thus the rocker pin. OH

Thank you OH. I couldn't find any pics like it. Maybe it was a bad design they caught early on and corrected? It's a nice size for EDC and if it wasn't tipped I'd take it around the block a few times. Oh well. Thanks again for the info.

You are welcome. It was a cosmetic change, the rocker pin is still there, it simply is under the handles. You could reshape the blade, it's already short, so put a new tip on it - plenty of life left in the blade. Alternately, you could send it to Buck for a new blade ($10.00) but the tang stamp would be current and not vintage to the knife. OH

The rocker pin was exposed on the first 501s that appeared in 1975. Within a couple of years, Buck changed to the hidden rocker pin.

I'd wharncliffe it, so it doesn't get any shorter. Then keep using it. It's a nice little knife.
