Nice looking old knife. Goins' book dates John Watts c. 18855-1953. I would call this a stockman pattern knife rather than a trapper.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

I have one like that. Same jigging, color, no shield, but mine is almost 4' and is stamped "BUTLER & Co." under a key.

A closer look reveals that the stamp is "G BUTLER& C0"
Interesting that your other recent post is about a Butler knife. You refer to a box. Same box for both knives?
Obviously a connection between Watts and Butler.
