Case Fillet Knife

Hi Folks,

I have a knife here I'm going to be putting up on eBay one of these days, but I do not know exactly what it is. I gather it is a fillet knife, but does anybody know what the spoon type extension on the back is for?

I am thinking maybe a scaler, or perhaps a pry mechanism to get a stubborn mouth open

Any thoughts or theories? Thanks!

Yea, we use them when fishing for salmon to clean out the blood along the backbone. Salmon bruise easily so they are killed immediately with a club to the back of the head. Salmon are gutted as soon as possible, including the gills and the blood along the backbone. Sometimes it's tough to get to all of them when the bite is wide open. Several times we have had 6 rods on the boat and had to pull 2 rods in. The bite was so on that 6 people limited in less than an hour on 4 poles when I was up in Oregon years ago, fishing out of Newport. We did that every day we went out. Anyhow, that's our use along the Pacific Ocean.

Say Bryan; I agree with hukk about the spoon on the back of the knife as we here in the NW still use this type of knife. Real men just cut the membrane and use their thumbnail . A couple years back, I picked up a Case pumpkin box from a little store near Brinnon on the Hood Canal here in WA state. He catered to fishermen and crabbers ,etc.,and I was just wondering if my box matches your knife. What are the tang stamp numbers on that little jewel? GJ
