Could it have been a bad batch of Micarta because my understanding is it is supposed to shed water and other liquids. The Micarta on knives i have used has not changed in appearance.
Please let us know the outcome.

Roland, Just assuming the detente is hiden away in that metal on the back at the pivot point. My guess is that it’s a bearing from how smoothly it moves.
About the canvas. CK told me there was no way to just clean a spot of oil off the canvas. To go ahead and oil the entire surface, which I figured would be the answer. It may shed water but that canvas is dry and will absorb oil. Which is an issue since your hands have oil in them and you are bound to get oils from other things. I didn’t actually get oil directly on the canvas, it was on the micro towel I was using to oil the blade before I put it in the display case, so it transferred from cloth to cloth, it’s that dry.
It looks fine oiled, it’s darker and I think will be fine. Not sending it back or anything. I would still recommend it, but be aware.
Mark
Roland, the detente it actually on the blade itself. They have made notches in the bottom of the blade for the half stop and the full stop. It comes into contact w/ the pin going across there. There is no bearing. I should have looked closer at the real thing instead of pictures. Pretty smart idea. See the second to last photo I am posting.
As you can see from the before and after photos, it doesn’t look bad oiled, but it is darker for sure. The last photo is from CK’s website.

I like the darker color better. I do not have many Micarta knives so my experience is limited. I asked earlier here but i'll ask again: have others had Micarta stain after contact with oil or oily substance ?
Does this type of joint even need oiling ? Mine is totally smooth so i have not oiled it.

Roland, you are probably right that it doesn’t need oiling. But I can’t help myself, when I get a new knife I have to look it over again and again. Then wipe it down and then oil all the metal. I am probably over doing it, but I don’t want my knives corroding from neglect. After I purchased the first knife collection and witnessed what happens when knives are put away w/out this treatment or put in a box or drawer and left there for decades and never having the least bit of care, you get a different perspective on this.
I like this knife either way, light or dark.

KJ, it has been my experience that micarta gets darker from contact with oil. If the oil dries out, as in scales in a leather sheath where the sheath soaks oil from the micarta, the scales will lighten. I have not had any to lighten back to original color.
Generally, the smoother the finish, the less the oil affects the color. Rougher textured micarta soaks more oil, therefore darkening it more.

Nice knife Kris. If you get a chance do you mind showing the sheath in more detail? I'm curious to see how it straps.

Thanks Paul, here are some pics. It has a cam lock welt that holds the knife in place with out the sheath being buttoned up, for quick release, works well. Been carrying it all day, will process our next hog with this knife.

I haven’t been disappointed w/ very many CCC knives that I have gotten over the years. Most all have been terrific. Now I am waiting on my red bone Kickstart that the club offered this summer. For once this wasn’t overpriced, like so many of the other CCC knives in the past. Actually offered at the low end of the retail price on the new Kickstarts. Suppose to be here before the end of the year. Another surprise some day.

Just arrived is a Bulldog Canoe from 1996, 4th generation. What drew me to this, besides it being a Bulldog, is the well figured burl wood covers. Pretty uncommon I think. The pen blade is too tight but a drop of Quick Release should take care of that. Over all in excellent condition for a knife a bit over two decades old. I'll put the rest of the photos in the Canoe thread.
