Received a Camillus 14 today and it's a dud. Contacted the seller and told him I want to send it back. Snap on the main blade is almost non-existent, even after oiling the joints and the main blade is about 1/8" short. Boo, hiss.

The good news is, I bought a Western W66 from Scott and it also came today. VERY satisfied with this knife. Thanks Scott. You're the best.

Jerry, take a good, close look at the date code on this L66. On my monitor, It "appears" to really be a "G". Many "G" knives are reported as "C" knives if the stamp has a lot of wear, as yours does. More "C" knives are reported/claimed to be "G" knives than really are "G"s.

IF it is a "G" and not a "C", it is "relatively" rare. Some models are frequently encountered, such as the W77/W75 boot knives. Others are occasionally seen, such as L66, H40, and L/648A/B models. Some are damn near non-existent - the W46-8 and W49 Bowies are examples.

I have seen and acquired a single "G" W46-8 and have seen and lost out on 2 authentic W49 "G"s. I haven't seen a "G" date coded W46-8 or W49 in the last 3 years.

I have 2 W49 "C" knives that were bought on fleabay because they were declared to be "G" date coded. Even after I messaged the sellers to double check that they whether they were "G" or "C" knives. When they got here, those 2 were very difficult to verify, but in the end each was a "C". A 3rd was so clearly a "C" that I could see it as soon as I opened the box and looked at it with no glasses on. That one went back as "not as described".

Very few "G" knives were made, in proportion to the number of knives made in other years by Western or Coleman/Western. 1983 was the last full year of Western production and many models were not made at full production rates or made at all. After Coleman bought Western, they went all out in 1984 ("H") and made a bunch of knives in every model they continued.

Wayne, I didn't even know there was a date code until you brought it up. I did a bit of studying on it using magnification and a flashlight and it appears to be a 'C' (1979 ?). Thanks for that bit of new to me information.

Edit: Although, I went back and looked and I have another picture that muddies the waters. Your opinion on this if you please.

Jerry, Looking at all those pictures, I'm gonna say that they all reflect a "G", a 1983 version. All of those letters appear to have the lower loop of the letter having a straight vertical look to it, especially the second #47.

Here's 2 pictures depicting W36 ricasso stamps. One is a "C" and the other is a "G". Notice that the lower loop of the "C" is curved and the lower loop of the "G" has a more vertical appearance, as well as a little "tic" poking into the interior of the letter.

The suckers changed fonts. Compare the #6 and the width of the letters. I'm still leaning towards a 'C'.

Well, I might have been foolish, but I think this is a pretty cool old knife. It's Camillus Sword Brand "Streamline" Jack from 1941-46. I know the handles are celluloid and notorious for outgassing & curling, but the knife is just so cool, I couldn't resist! There is no number on this knife, and the Streamline knives aren't in the 1946 Camillus catalog. Does it have a number? It is 3 7/8" closed.

I have been drooling over this green trapper for months and Vipers I am starting to collect. I only have one other and I love it. I don’t see much discussion about Vipers on here. These are great knives. Most have much wider blades, ideal for slicing or skinning.

Be sure to consider one of the LionSteel Roundheads, Doms, or Shufflers from CK if you get a chance. They are really sweet Barlows with great steel, superb walk & talk, and they feel great in the hand. I have two of the Roundheads and they are a real bargain for what you get.

I came here to post my new knife thinking most people would know about it, and there it is posted by Mark, the CK Viper E.O. Mine has carbon fiber handles. Neat knife and if the M390 steel does edge hold a long time, then it will be a very capable EDC. I have used mine a little and it is possible the sharp edge will outlast me.
Can someone explain the 'detente' mechanism ? Is there a coil spring around the pivot ? or ??

USPS paid a visit and left this. Believe it's a 1917-1946 as far as I can tell. I like TDrops and this kind of bone. Sold as peach seed but doesn't quite look like what I've seen on others billed as peach seed. Anyway I love the old bone colors and old steel. Looks like Rogers bone to me. Anyway, my first Schrade. Man, they used to make a great knife. If I didn't know better I would say it snaps and feels and sounds like a GEC. Nothing like the recent Schrade knives that I"ve worked on for friends. The recently aquired Camillus Equal end also pictured, similar era, similar bones.

Roland, that was a new term to me. After reading up on it, it can be one of many things. A ball that is recessed and slides along the spring until it hits another recess that temporarily halts it until more pressure is applied to move it. Or it can just be the normal slip joint blade against spring.
This Viper has a half stop, which I found surprising, and no locking mechanism, but good holding qualities for the fully open position. So far I am impressed, only wish I had gone w/ the carbon fiber like you had. This canvas absorbs everything. Got oil on mine near the tang and it has darkened the canvas. I am going to contact CK to see what they recommend to clean it.

Thanks Mark but where is the "spring" you refer to ? There is no backspring. Very odd about the absorbent Micarta. Could it have been a bad batch of Micarta because my understanding is it is supposed to shed water and other liquids. The Micarta on knives i have used has not changed in appearance.
Please let us know the outcome.

Few knives have provided me with so much satisfaction upon their arrival as this one: a 5 blade, Green Bone, Bulldog Stockman made in 1998.
"Lucky" is the single standing bulldog on the master blade, a champion belonging to the Parkers. It is fully mint but most impressive is the build quality. It is evident that when BD wanted to bring out one of their multi-blade wonders [5 or 6 blades] they used only their best cutlers. The knife is as close to flawless as a man made object can be. Blades perfectly centered, F&F, walk and talk, everything superb.

Thank you John. Interesting to me is that it is the heaviest pocket knife I've held by far. It is 4 1/4 " but I wouldn't have thought the two additional blades would add so much weight. Wish I had a scale.
