What age bracket would this shield fit into?

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

What age bracket would this shield fit into?

Post by Meridian_Mike »

Hey everyone.
I am looking at this Utility knife and I am trying to put an approximate year bracket on it. I can't tell if the shield is pinned.
Are there other features of this one that stand out as far as year is YOM is concerned?
This pic is all I have to go on right now.

Thanks for looking!!

Well, I did get a couple of more pics..... It looks like maybe a 1940-64 Case XX.
The other 2 I have are the ones with the little thumb post on the short spear blade. This is my first 640045R. Looks like the blades are in pretty good shape.

LOL.... Well, my wife doesn't think so most of the time.
BUT, I am smart enough to keep my mouth shut most of the time.... LOL.

Thanks for the complement!
After I got the new pics, the research was a bit easier.

Looks like a pretty nice examine Mike. You may know already that those 640045 patterns were made on contract for Case, probably by Camillus.

Mike, I don't know about you but that kind of information makes my head spin. Before I came here I never would have guess so much 'farming out' took place. Still a nice Case knife. ::tu::

As others have mentioned, you have answered your question. I would also add that the shield is a match for the tang stamp in terms of corroborating the era / age. The link included below provides more information about the various Case shields and approximately when they were used.
