1st time knife handle build

Post by sunknife »

I've had this blade laying around for a few months and finally got around to making and mounting handles on it. It's a 6" full tang blade of 1095 steel that Fred Asbel sells. A friend of mine bought a handful of them at a rendezvous earlier this year and gifted me one. I used a scrap of buckthorn sapwood for the scales, epoxied onto the tang and 2 steel pins inserted. Used leather dye to color the wood and put a narrow strip of dyed rawhide and braided cord
wrap on the scales near the blade end, I was going for a sort of frontier look.
It was a fun project and I learned a few things along the way. I may have to pick up a few more of these relatively affordable blades for more handle mounting projects. The blade came with an extremely sharp edge and he has a small variety of shapes and sizes. First though I need to make a sheath for this one. I'm thinking raw hide over leather neck sheath with adornments, this will be a first for me as well.
Thanks for taking a look. :)

That is a great looking frontier build. Nice shape in the blade for that period, with complementing handle style and finish.

Post pics of your future work. We will want to see it.

Thanks for all the kind comments guys, I really appreciate it.
If I had any metal working skills and knowledge I could see knife building as a enjoyable hobby for me, just doing the handle build on this one was fun.

Thanks Steve.
I reread what I had written at the top and realized I may have described the blade as 6" long when in fact the overall knife length is 6".
Here is another pic to put it all in perspective. A mini frontier knife if you will. :D
Thanks again to all above for the kind comments.
