Yes, I think that was some kind of special edition that SMKW ran in the nineties because as Jerryd said 3 different 72's had it and I found a 709 with that jigged black bone the other day.carrmillus wrote:......if you look at it with one of jerryd's 65x magnifiers, you can tell it's bone!!................................

I don't know what you're talking about. The #14 is a 3-3/8" serpentine Jack with clip & pen.carrmillus wrote:....jerry, just looked thru mine again, thought I had one of these-may have gifted it to someone!!...how about a black handled #14, 2 blade(clip master and small clip)(no coping blade) 3 5/8" swell center, oval shield, short-line marking??..not sure if it's bone or composition, it's hard to tell??
All this detail stuff is getting to be too much for my microscopic mind. I'm leaving all those details to those who enjoy it.

....jerry, I went back and got this one out and looked at it,......it is short line marked. it's 3 5/8", clip master(stamped #14) and pen secondary, sharp pointed oval shield, and it is black bone-I was wrong about the secondary being a clip blade!!...........jerryd6818 wrote:I don't know what you're talking about. Picked up a McGrew marked 72 that was commissioned by National Wood Carvers Association. The blade is etched 'Chip Chats (their news letter) 1953-1993, 40th Anniversary. Got it from our own Tom Cosgrove. I like 72's, I like McGrew's and I like whittling so it was a win, win, win. Thanks Tom.

Doglegg, you're liable to set Jerryd on fire with that. I don't think I've ever seen that one.

I have one. Not serialized like that though (I think). Not at home to look.gsmith7158 wrote:Doglegg, you're liable to set Jerryd on fire with that. I don't think I've ever seen that one.

Jerry, at what point did camillus change from a saber ground blade to flat?

Re: camillus #72
On the pile side of the blade, it was mid/late 1940s. I don't know for sure but I'm going to say 1948ish. The main was saber ground on the mark side and flat ground on the pile side from 1948ish until the early-mid 1980s and flat ground on both sides from then on. That would have been after they stopped pinning the handles on in about 1976 and adopted the post method of mounting the handles. All very approximately. None of that is set in concrete.KnifeSlinger#81 wrote:Jerry, at what point did camillus change from a saber ground blade to flat?

Re: camillus #72
Paul, I get the impression they didn't produce a lot of 72s with both sides saber ground. At least you don't see many of them.

In my meager but growing accumulation of 72s, I have two with the full saber grind. One is a first-gen, the other is a 1047 that doesn't seem cobbled.jerryd6818 wrote:Paul, I get the impression they didn't produce a lot of 72s with both sides saber ground. At least you don't see many of them.
My main user 1047 is a single-side saber grind. It also has the swage on one side only.
Camillus liked that single-sided saber grind on a lot of their knives, it seems. I've got a 21 with it, too.
