A rather old thread perhaps, but an interesting one, so I continue...
Sometimes they make you wonder.. or me. What are they?.. who are they?.. the pets.
have so many stories, or rather peculiaritis to contemplate about our dog. Can´t resist to share one with you, right from the first beginning:
It was just before he came to us. In fact the very day we came to bring him to his new home with us. On the lawn in front of us were a pile of ten pups crawling all over each other trying happily to rip the ears of oneanother. One of them were the chosen one, he would be ours, or we to be his. We had then met the pups for about four weeks ago and made our choice. He had then been five weeks old and you could have held him up in one of your hands with ease. Severel of them had the same color, so it was not easy to see which one in the puppypile where ours.
After half aminute or so, the playing started to slow down and one after another they stould up and walked slowly away out of our site behind the house, but one of them went purposeful in opposite direction, straight down to us. Laid on the back and continued to play, with us this time. He looked very happy to see us. We looked up and all his siblings were gone, everything was quiet and no other pups were in sight. I looked at the little happy dog at our feet and found it was him, the chosen one. We recognised him only by the shape of the white star on his chest.
Well, we didnt thought of it so much then of some reason. I reckon you dont do that always, realise how strange a certain moment really are before a little time went by. But I`ve come to think of it since; how big was the probability that just one of them pups came up to us and alone, without company of any of his brothers and that particular one was just our very dog we chose for four weeks ago when he was five weeks old? He and two more could have come, or three more or a completly other dog with or without a combination of brothers, or none if all had disappeared. And why did they stop playing right then? Like on a command. There would´ve, statistically. been a very small probability for all that to happen right then, I assume. Did he recognise us? I dont know. We held each and everyone of the other pups too when we were there before, why didnt the others recognise us and came to say hello? I mean, there were ten of them...
Just one of those things that seems more and more strange the more you realise how, in fact, peculiar it was when you come to think of it.
He has not stopped to amaze us, sometimes its almost scary when he seems to know things like that someone is coming home within ten minutes on unusual times hes not used to and when the car must be way out of sniffhold, or when he obviously out of his behavior seen, must have known what we talked about at different times. Things that he being a dog, didnt ought to understand.
But that is some other stories...

About 4 years ago my wife & I decided to get each other a puppy for Valentines Day to keep me company at home all day since I had just retired. She did some research on types of dogs and decided we might a like Lhasa Apso.
We drove about an hour to see some puppies. One of them crawled up on my lap and promptly fell asleep. He has been my dog ever since. We named him Gus.

Yes, I thought of that also Gringo. Didn´t remembered the name of the breed and the color reminded me of some shorthaired Collie.gringo wrote:bull...he is an austrialian cattle dog...fell on the dingo side of the tree...he has his bently,( black ring around one eye). but he is a bit of a wild one..most of the heelers are live wires...

This is the dog I wasn't going to have. My old collie bitch died 3 years ago aged 17, me and the missus cried like babies and decided we weren't going to have another. 3 months later I got this offered to me, 2 years old, neglected, stir crazy, have to be a fool to take her on. So I did. Shes 5 years old now, cries when I come in from work, has to have a cuddle before she beds down for the night, nothing special, just the best dog in the world. And when she eventually goes I'm not having another one. Again. Ever.
stop me when I get boring

i have a confession...a friend owns a dog grooming business...every time i go in there, every time, dogs i have never seen before act like i am mr. bisket distributor...they jump me and kiss me and i know for sure it is all an act...'just give me the biskets mister'....and it doesn't stop there...everywhere i go ...mean dogs..cute dogs...buttuglies....they all think i have biskets in my pocket...
and i even wash my clothes and clean the crumbs out of my pockets....?

Ever since I got here I have thought about puttin somthin in here about pets I have had and those that own this place now but I keep tellin myself that you guys would'nt believe it at all.
When I was about 7 I found 11 baby skunks under our house, the Mother had been run over out and down the dirt road aways and these guys were tellin every one within earshot that they were hungry.
They were not old enough to be weened so me and a few guys started feedin them with eye droppers, my dad found out and just about had a fit.
We finnaly talked him into lettin us keep them and my Uncle was a vet and we talked him into fixxin the little critters (so to speak) so they could not spray anything anymore, but we were going to have to wait about six weeks till they got old enough.
I had a little sister that was only about 2 or 3 and she could crawll across the floor and all of those little critters would fallow her in a straite line even if she made a figure 8, one right after the other, one day she was tryin to walk and she didnt have very good balance and here are 11 little skunks tryin to get her attention, the next thing you know she had fallen over and sat right down on a couple of them, the all squalled and I am sure that all of them got in at least one shot, in the middle of the livin room.
The Smell never goes away totally though, we managed to give all but two of them away, my grandmother took one of those and we kept the other one, FAN TAIL and CHUBBY.
It was about this same time that we had this little bobcat, a Red tailed Hawk, a grey Squirrle named Buterscotch.
The Bobcat we had caught a little to late in his life hahaha he never realy did tame down as far as I wished he would, sometimes when it was feeding time you could lose chunks of hide from the back of your hand if you were not real fast.
Red, the hawk had a dislike for the Bobcat and CAT had a dislike for Butterscotch and at times one would be after the other after the other and my mom would be screamin that she was going to kill all of us kids if we didnt get all of them out of the house.
I guess that is why I have the zoo I have now days LOL, I have writers cramp now so I will add to this later hahahah
Rusty
P.S. A little aside here about skunks, they can carry rabbies all of their life it does not effect them like it does everything else, and you do not have to be bitten to get rabies, a bad scratch from infected claws is enough.
Like other animals though the only way to tell if a skunk has the disease is to kill it or wait till it dies of natural causes and examine the brain.

MEET THE LADIES
These old girls know how to multitask. They mow the grass, handle security and lay BIG tasty eggs. And best of all they have full pension rights, I've had them longer than my grandkids and I will have to be very hungry before they get put on the menu

You cant get any better watch critter than those right there and they bite too LOL
Guineas are real good too and when I was about ten we had some folks just down the road had half a dozen and every morning they would come up to our place to sound off the crack of day about an hour before it really happened.
I got real tired of it in more ways than one and Granddad ( I was raised by my Grandparents), had a blackpowder double barrel 10 gauge but we didnt have no powder for it hahaha but not to far down the road there was this ole boy had smokeless powder shotshells he let me have a few of them and I did not dare tell him what I was gona do with them cause the Guineas were HIS hahahaha I took a a couple of them apart and it did not look much like black powder but there wasn't much in them so I put two in each barrel and I climbed up on the roof of the house and just before dawn here them came, I did not mention that this ole shooter was a damascus barreled relic but I had in the past brought down quite a bit of game with it.
About 50 yards from the house they started in cacklin up a storm and I pulled the hammers back on both barrels and aimed right in the middle of the gaggle and squeezed the trigger hahaha the flame just rolled out of the barrel, feathers were flyin, the hammers took off over my shoulder singing, I went slidding backwards down the roof like I had been shot out of a barrel myself, off the roof into Granny's roses, I thought I had broken my shoulder and when I found the shotgun there was about 7 foot of the barrels uncoiled.
ALL the Guineas were dead and when Granddad came out of the house so was I --------BUMMER DEAL MAN----------
Enjoy The Day Folks

I think that every kid in America should have to grow up with pets, they teach you that if you are mean to me I will be mean right back, animals are not two faced, you pretty much know where you stand with them.
I guess that because I grew up with so many is the reason I have so many now.
Some of these stories you all are not going to believe but I will tell you and you can take it for what it is worth, but I never lie, liers are worse than thieves.
Each and every one has thier own personality and thier own love to give and it does not take a lot to get alot back, they dont ask for much of anything.
There is Watson, he is a Watsonian Terrier, dont feel to bad if you have never heard of one cause he is the only one there is, he does a very good job of keeping up the reputation of his breed, they are like a magnet that you can not get away from, I found Watson on the bank of a lake that I fish at allmost on a weekly basis, but here is the kicker he was in an area that about 10 years before I had deemed as a lousy fishing spot, I went about a mile and a half on around the lake in 110 degree weather and walked about 150 yards down to the lake and from where I came out of the brush on the back he was about 20 yards away.
When I found him he did not have the streangth to lift his head and he was not making any noise, I thought he was allready dead but I got closer and he growled at me.
He looked like just a skin with bones in it, I toke my shirt off leaving me a tee shirt and I drapped it over some brush to get him out of the sun.
I sat down as close to him as he would let me get and talked to him, told him I would not let him die by himself, I sat there with him for about 20 minutes and thought about putting him out of his misery and then decided that he realy needed some food and water and a cooler place to die.
I did not mention that the tips of his ears had been chewed up by flies and were very bloody and he had 23 burns on his tummy from what looked like cigerettes, part of his tail had been cut off, some of his nails had been pulled out.
I had just come back from a very rough fishin trip so dont look to close.

- The name of the park I was in was called Watson Park so that is how he got his name, I know that is not to imaginative but I was ment to find him right there right then and that was what his name was ment to be I guess.

sorry to hear bout your lil dog layin down, they don't live long enough. i've buried my share over the years and at 50 yrs. old i still cry like i did when i lost em as a kid. I used to say and believe the same thing you said here bout liers being worse then thieves, till about 1997, i had a walker dawg i got as a young dog.best coondawg i ever followed through the woods. put a lot of boot tracks through the swamps , plowed fields, accross rivers and through the hardwood. won alot of night hunts, trophies and money with ol jack. he earned a lot of championship awards. 2 ohio state championships, 2 in michigan, ukc grand nite ch. pkc silver ch. and sired over 200 puppies.not to mention the pride he gave me and the good friends i made huntin w/him.then when he was 12 yrs. old . a lowlife came to the house when i was'nt here and stole him and his 2yr old grandson from thier pens, i had left the locks unclasp because it was so cold they kept freezin up. i had just drove to tenn. from mich and bought the grandson for 2500.00. cause jack was gettin too old to hunt. it did'nt bother me half as much to loose his grandson as it did to lose jack like that. why would someone steal a dog that was 12 yrs. old. all they did was deprive me of the right to bury him here and like you said , be w/him when he died. i had never felt the emotion of hate in my life till that night. they could have stole any material thing i own and i would not have felt that. took a lot outta me , i loved that ol dog, bonded w/him, oh i knew i was gonna lose the ol boy, i had a spot to put him and had drug a big flat rock outta the back woods for his grave.but they took that privlege from me.took alot of yrs for i'd even think bout goin coonhuntin again. i did find out who got em and where they went, they took them to mississippi that same night and sold them. i had to stop myself short or go to prison when i found out, i know they got a warm spot waitin for them. but now i put liers and thieves in the same group. nuff said

I am very sorry to hear that TC,I would have to pull a S&D. I have said many time there would not be another dog or cat or any pets but all of the pets I have would not have now or would not have had a life of any kind if it were not for me and my wife who is just as big a pattsy I guess.
The cats are pretty much hers, the solid black ones are Witch, FatBoy, Scar,Sissy, Buba,Batty, then we have a VERY long haired Siamese named Fuzzy Butt, Black&White named Twinky, these all live indoors, outdoors we have four that have been here since they were kittens about 4 months now and they are semi wild, we feed and water them but have not really named them yet.
Then there are the dogs,BrutusBear is a solid black Newfoundland and he weighs in at about 130 or maybe a little more, we found him in a WllMart shopping cart out in the parkinglot along with his little brother, there was a sign laying over them that said (free to good home to boys), they had been beat very baddly and after ten years Brutus still cowers instantly if you raise your hand over your head and he has never been hit since he has been here, we found a young lady to take the other one shortly after we found them.
BabyBear is a solid black ChowChow full blood, he was tied to the back end of my personal pickup, he was not old enough to be weened cause he still had his milk teeth, he was small enough to put inside my shirt when I snuck him in the house and surprized moma with him, I am not sure how long he was there but I was out on a run for three days and when I came in it was about midnight, if I had not heard him trying to getaway uderneath the truck I could have drug him to death, I hate people sometimes, he is 12 now.
I am gettin cramps so I will add to this later, it is almost 4:30 am time to crash.
Enjoy The Day Guys and Gals
