Did You Ever Lose Your Knife?

Old Hunter I'm always looking at the old hardware stores and gun shops for those old USA Schrade but it seems like looking for a needle in a haystack as they seem to have been all brought up.How successful have you been?

Doug, I was fairly successful, but that has been 11 - 13 years ago. Back then you would find a few Schrade USA made slower movers (77OT, 104OT, 3OT, etc.) mixed in with newer off-shore made Schrades. I haven’t seen a new, USA made, for sale in a hardware store, Gunshop, or lumber yard for several years. I find most nowadays in combo gun & pawn shops - they come in with gun collections sometimes (along with the occasional Boker, Camillus, or Primble) and fairly often with a Case or Buck. OH

I hope so too but I lucked out on that run and also got one in sawcut bone.
GEC does a great job on their sawcut bone imo.

This one is losing its etch and has some pepper spots but it’s still as snappy as the day I got it.

I have lost a few knives over the years. The three that still bother me are. A Kershaw scallion. I was working nights at a truck shop. I had a road call of a tractor trailer broken down on the side of Baltimore & Washington express way. I used the knife to cut off a broken air line on the trailer. I remember laying the knife beside me after the repair. I had a lot of wrenches in my hands so the driver helped me collect my tools. Talking to him about the repair I forgot all about the knife until I got back to the shop. I was not going to drive a hour back to look for it.

The second was a Schrade Uncle Henry stockman my son had given me for Fathers day when he was 8 years old. I was using it fishing one night after work. I had laid the knife on a bench while cutting fishing line. a storm came up and I grabbed all my tackle and headed for the truck. I remembered the knife when I got home so the next day I stopped to retrieve the knife. It was gone.


The 3rd was a Buck 110. I was doing some work up at our Farm. My clothes were pretty dirty so I changed before I got in my truck to head home. I took knife sheath off my belt and laid it in the barn. That was the last I saw of it. In fact I am still looking for it.

I have lost too many knives to count.One of my favorites was a Henckels premium stock knife with the most beautiful stag handles ever. Burned a notch in the master blade when I cut through a live wire while standing on a ladder at the top of three flights of stairs(don't ask why).Shortly afterward it went MIA.
Lost a great Italian stiletto to my home room teacher when I was in the ninth grade. He didn't appreciate me playing with it in class.
One really strange one was not me losing a knife but someone else. I worked in Salem Massachusetts for many years and one of my friends(who was also a customer) was the curator of the Salem Witch Museum. He called me one day and told me that while they were doing some renovations in the museum(they had torn out a couple of walls)he had found a knife hidden(or lost)inside one of them and asked if I wanted it. Naturally I said yes and went down to the museum after work. The knife was an Anton Wingen gravity knife that was in fantastic shape except it was slow to open. A little cleaning out with lacquer thinner cured that problem. Always wondered how long it had been in there and who left it there. The building was quite old so it must have been there awhile.

I have recently lost this 66 Calf Roper and what's really a bummer is it was a replacement for the first one I lost
Two others I've lost that made me a bit sick was an ebony 14 and The one that almost pushed me over the edge was a small Sebenza 21.Now all three of these knives are MIA.

There is a red bone Case XX 048 two blade slim trapper somewhere in this house or on this property.

Been missing for thirty-five years.

Last time I saw it, it was in an AMT model car box on the shelf of our master bedroom closet.

I have absolutely no idea what happened to it.

My heartbreaker was the battered and ancient Stock that I’d permanently borrowed off my Dad. (I borrowed it so much, he stopped asking for it back!) I’m pretty sure I lost it when we were moving in ‘82. I remember handing it to a friend to cut down a box. We never went back and I never saw the knife again. The knife my parents actually bought me when I was about twelve is missing to and I have no idea when or where, but I suspect it was in my fishing gear that went off to the impound in the trunk of the car my ex crashed. He was fine and so was the other guy but we did lose the car.
I know I have a Boker from several months ago when I was just ramping up the collecting. I got it for a couple of bucks, looked up the tang stamp and that’s all I remember. Haven’t seen it since. I kind of suspect previous roomies. There’s a Barlow AWOL too and an Irish made single blade that I found in the first place.
The one that came back is a cheap Mastercraft lockback, the kind with the blue handle and half saw blade. It was my work knife until it went missing. Looked all over the shop, asked everyone, nope, gone. I figured one of the summer kids snagged it.
About a year later, I had to go through a skid of library shelving braces and dividers to confirm what was in the boxes. This kind of annoyed me, because I’d been the one who put them on the skid in the first place and they hadn’t been touched.
Yes, everything was in the boxes, just as I’d left it...including my knife!

There are some very poignant stories here. I have lost a couple of smaller size Buck lockbacks that my wife gave me: I guess those are the only ones that bother me much.

When I was growing up a knife was a tool that everyone carried, but I do not recall my Dad or older brothers having much sentimental attachment to their knives. Perhaps because of that I did have a big attachment to my knives either. That is just as well, because I lost many knives between age eight and twenty eight. I especially remember the two (or three?) Schrade Sharp Fingers that I lost. I loved fixed blades and the Sharp Finger was such a perfect knife for skinning squirrels and rabbits and doing all the stuff that teenage boy out in the woods wants to do. Unfortunately, with the small blade and heavy handles, the sheaths just would not retain the knife when I was running through the woods trying to keep up with my dogs and whatever critter we were after. Those beautiful carbon steel blades are probably just a layer of rusty colored earth between two scales of synthetic, hidden beneath the forest leaves today.

I lost a Case Peanut at one of two spots outdoors in December of 1973, if my memory is correct. I looked diligently for it but couldn't find it. I did better until in 2011 I bought some Mountain Hardware rock-climbing pants. I've never rock-climbed, & never will, but they were great for bushwacking. They fit well, dried quickly & were very resistant to abrasion. I bought a second pair, different color. They had several useless pockets, too, more than I knew at first. The fabric was so smooth that any contents quickly slipped out of the shallow pockets but there was one deep pocket with a zipper. In one pair of those pants, however, the bottom of the pocket with a zipper was not sewn. Anything in that pocket could slip out the bottom of it into another pocket & slip out on the ground pretty quickly. I lost a Case Baby Butterbean that I last remembered carrying in that pocket when I was hiking in Panthertown Valley, NC. It was a 2007 Johnny Cash commemorative that had "CASH" on one bone handle so if I let someone use it they always gave it back to me. I bought another Case Baby Butterbean, but couldn't find one with my surname on it, & after it disappeared I figured out how I'd managed to loose two knives so quickly. I've not lost another knife since but I do welcome ever opportunity to bad-mouth Mountain Hardware.

Great stories sorry for your losses, I've lost several over the years ,but only one that mattered, on my 10th birthday, my grandad gave me a new in the box, Bear creek, Andrew Jackson ol' hickory, it was a serial numbered knife with 2 blades,blade etch and a red plastic pearl handle, carried it too school one day and fell victim too a hole in the pocket that was 1979, been looking for another one for the last 20 years
.saw one online after it sold in all these years...lol, never give up..
