I picked up this knife a few years back at an estate sale and had almost forgot that I had it. Was in my gun safe the other day and see it laying on a back shelf. I am not an avid collector per say but something about this one caught my eye. Looking to get any information I could about this knife. Thank you in advance!

This is one of the best knives I've seen on this site. It was likely made in the 1840s-1850s, and the style is often referred to as a "folding bowie" knife. Yours has some condition issues like the blade opens past a "straight" position, but it is generally in pretty good shape for one of these. These are highly sought after with the horse head and early American eagle motif. You did really well at that estate sale for sure! I love it!!

The two bolsters, where the blade pivots, are not original it looks like they were replaced with lead or aluminum. Originally they would have been ornate hollow nickle silver with a stamped design similar to the bolster's on the other end that are original.

Very early and desirable old knife to the right collector, however the replaced bolsters will affect the price considerably.

WOW! Definitely a rare beast in any condition. I only have one Bunting knife and it is a half congress. When I bought it I thought the secondary blade had been shortened but upon closer examination it appears to have been made that way. I have a Wostenholm knife with a similar blade and someone suggested it may have been used for tipping cigars.

Thank you everyone, even combing the internet I've found very little information. I've gotten more info in the last couple of days then I've been able to find myself.
