I robbed this from pa knives' "Give this thread a try and see where it goes" thread. I was hoping to hear more stories.

Do you remember your first knife? What kind was it? Where did you get it? Do you still have it?

Being you stoled this from me I feel obilgated to be the first to respond. HA HA AH

Well, my first knife was a camp style that my father gave me for Christmas in 1969. Colonial with fork and spoon attached. Nothing fancy, but he knew I liked knives and the outdoors. Not an expensive knife by any means, but mind you was only 11 at the time. This was when you carried your knife to school and didn't worry about be in trouble for it. Yes I still have that knife and it isn't all beat up either. Still not worth much to a collector but to me it is priceless. I laugh when someone reveiws my collection of antique pocket knives with pearls and fine bone handles and then sees this oddity at the bottom of the roll???? What the heck is this. My pride and joy I tell them. Thanks dad, but couldn't you have found a nice antique Remington Scout that would be worth like twenty times the amount you would have paid for it???? HA HA, sorry, I never stop looking for great finds.

My first knife.....probably when I was in Boy Scouts sometime. My dad used to get me Swiss Army knives for when I was there. Still have them lying around the house doing nothing, should clean them up because they usually got dirty.

My first knife I remember was when I was 5, about 1965. My dad and I would go fishing with my great uncle. I hade learned how to tie my own hooks without any help but would always need one of them to clip off the extra line. My uncle ask " Does this boy have his own knife yet ?" My dad told him "no". "Well he does now." and gave me a knife that most every boy wanted --A barlow. It was the best knife ever, white scales,barlow in block letters,And two pins. One at the back, and one on the bottom. The knife made it through grade school,jr. high, and high school. When I started work and going to college it met a rather untimely end. I was working on my car and used it to pry with and snaped the main blade off.I tried to replace it with a Schrade stockman,but it never the same.So now I don't carry the same knife for very long,I get bored with them or I don't like the way some carry in the pocket. Well now I'm a little older and have more time ,I have tried to find another barlow like the one I had when I was young, with no luck. Well now I a few barlows in my collection,German & American. I'll find one like it one day. Right now I'm having fun looking.

Sorry I just could not resist telling about 3 knives!!! My first is a small 3 1/4" overall knife that my dad gave me when I was about 8-9 years old. I have had it ever since. He told me he brought it back from WW2. I guess I starting collecting back than. Attached is a scan of the knife.

The second knife was really the start of my collecting in earnest. This knife addiction I want all to know is not my fault, it's my wifes. When were dating she liked antiques and went to garage sales and antique shops. Well I wanted to be with her but as I remember it I said to her I don't want to look at other peoples junk!!! What a jerk I was. She said why don't you collect something so we can enjoy looking together. I told her I always liked knives and I bought a copy of Levine's 3rd edition and read it cover to cover. Soon after that we went to an auction that had some old pocket knives in it. I found that there were a few good knives in the box and started bidding on them but since 50.00 was all I had I kept getting out bid. The last knife I bid on was an old Sunfish by Union Razor Co. When I lost the bid my wife said offer the guy who bought it 5.00 more than he paid for it. I told her I did not have the 5.00 which she replied I will give it to you. He sold the knife to me for the 60.00 and I still have it. The blades are well used but I will never sell it. So you see how it was her fault!!!! Attached is ascan of the knife.

The last is a small pearl handled congress whittler that I picked up marked Galvanic 1882. The main blade has a fancy etch GALVANIC in script. Although one blade is snapped off at the tang it is still one of my favorites.

galvanic 1882, you have been holding out on me. You know how crazy I am for Old Pa knives. There you sit with a beautiful Union Sunfish and you didn't even tell me. Of course you didn't because I would have driven you nuts trying to get it from you. Obviously you like as much as I would. Nice knife, great photo, super story, but man I am jealous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just wait unitl I find that next JBC, I will tease you with it unitl you cave in and trade me the Tidioute knife. HA HA HA!!!

My first knife was a standard scout, probably like most of us. I don't have it anymore. My step dad broke it when he was cutting bacon with it while we were camping. Oh well, at least it did good service.

In reference to PA Knives comment about why couldn't his Dad have gotten him a Remington scout which would be more collectable now, I'm already looking forward to buying my son's first knife. If it's a scout, it'll be a Schatt and Morgan Premiere scout or something like that, rest assured.

Problem is, he has to get born first. I've got a little girl who I love more than life, but I don't see her sharing my interest in knives at any point.

My 1st knife was a cheap Pakastian knife , I bought from a service station.
I agree they are the worst knives ever made , but I still own it and would not get rid of it for nothing.
I have a large knfie collection and it sticks out like a sore thumb, but its in there.

My first knife was a small 2-blade Imperial with black handles and silver bolsters that I had bought for a nickle from my Aunt when I was 7 years old. She told me that you must never Give or recieve a knife from someone without giving a coin in exchange, because if you did, it would cut your friendship with that person down the line. I never believed that, but I always give or take a coin. Doing that always brings back found memories of my childhood, and my Aunt. I still have that pocket knife, it has been over 40 years ago.
