Poppy's Outdoor SKills Training Camp....DAY ONE!
Had 6 boys booked, 2 backed out, 1 was sick but these 3 worked their butts off....this wasn't no mission.


Pic 2 shows the downed pine tree we decided to tackle. Pic 3 , you can see a good portion of it is missing becasue we
debranched and cut it !!

Great post Scott. I was hoping you would post pictures. The little fellow with the P on his cap and the hammer in his hand in the next to the last picture has the look that says it all. Looks like he is ready for more. Can't wait for day 2.

You might want to advise the little feller with the long black socks to be careful with the other end of the maul, looks like he might be gettin’ a little too close for comfort!
As always, you are to be commended, teach them things they’ll probably not learn at home.

Watched a couple half grown bunnies taking dirt baths, chasing each other and jumping, man can they jump. They came down to the house but but by the time I'd got the camera phone one had left.20180529_063745.jpg

Still one day remaining form Poppy's Outdoor Skills Training Camp.....but we did reduce this tree down to a nice stack of firewood
in 5.5 hours over 2 days. Props to these fellas!!

Before the training camp yesterday I was fortunate to spot a Swallow Tailed Kite......wow.....magnificent. (not my picture).

There is nothing like a good case of “Bass Thumb” (for those not familiar with it stripers are the perfect fly rod fish for many reasons - and one is their small teeth so it is easy to lip them and pop the fly to release them) – yesterday was just one insane late afternoon/evening/night of stripers on the fly where you lose complete count of fish caught except the big boys (no doubt over 50 easy as for 2.5 hours it was every 2nd or 3rd cast and the last 40 minutes every cast) – biggest was 33” to beginning of fork on tail measured against my rod – estimated somewhere between 16-20 lbs easy - big shoulders, fat and healthy (sorry no fish photos as I stopped taking what I call "hero" shots long long ago - better to get the fish back in the water asap)… Most fish in the 18-24" slot and majority were fresh arrivals covered with sea lice…. The stars were aligned - no wind and good moving water with an incoming tide - and I thought last week was good... first time in years I left the fish biting - sometimes enough is enough .... BTW - only used 2 flies in all that time - and the more the flies get chewed the better they always seem to work ...

You're correct, Scott! They are a magnificent bird. We see them occasionally, but always a treat!

LongBlade, I've had the "Bass Thumb" a few times myself. That used to be a thing in the mornings at work, showing a "BassThumb" without a comment. Real fishermen understood. Thanks for sharing that picture!

Great fishing story, Lee. That sounds like a good time on the water. That can be a workout. I've caught Blues like that from the beach, only I was surf casting, and didn't think I could catch another one I was so tired. That picture of your thumb is a hero shot to me.

Today I was walking at a pond and found this Snapper digging a hole to lay her eggs. A nice thing to witness.
