Great gift.

My brother gave me this one for my birthday. It's made by "off grid knives".
The steel is from Japan, and assembled in Taiwan. The steel is AUS8, cryogenically treated.
Pretty neat. I'm gonna carry it to work.

A new old one....a Schrade 863, complete with tube.

And a new new one. An Outdoor Edge Swingblaze, with a blade that swings around to a guthook. I saw my buddy take the back-straps out of a couple of hogs in a couple of minutes with one of these, and had to have one. It came shaving sharp.

Old and new, a great combination.

Mike, really great find on that 863. I was gifted one in the tube like that by Rocky and it holds a position at the top of my accumulation.

Today's mail was a bit disappointing for several reasons:

1. 2005 Case 61154 Tiny Trapper in turquoise bone - once again I got in a hurry and did not think before bidding. This knife was listed as a Mini Trapper, and I'm dumb enough not to have verified the pattern number and realized it is a tiny trapper, not a mini trapper! There's really nothing wrong with a Tiny Trapper, and it is a Case pattern I didn't previously have, so I should be happy - but now it just reminds me that I'm both ignorant and sloppy...

2. Ka-Bar 1100 Large Stockman with synthetic handles - this knife is considerably more clapped-out than I expected (and that's saying something for me!). The seller's pictures of the blades looked much better than the actual knife. The seller must have played with the lighting to get some shine on what are very dull and discolored blades. There's also zero closing snap on all three blades. Hopefully it is just dirt & grime and I can improve it, but overall I'm disappointed. The large stockman pattern has become my nemesis - I have far more disappointments than wins buying that pattern.

Large (>4") stockmen are available out there. Maybe focus on the Schrade 858, Buck 307, or the venerable Case 75?

If the Schrade 8OT, Buck 301 and Case 47/92 (all sub-4") fit your definition of "large stockman", you might find some winners among them, too.

I like that 61154. I may need to find myself a single-blade tiny trapper too.

I suspect when it comes to larger knives in popular patterns (like a stockman) the incidence of clean, lightly-used ones on the secondary market drops off precipitously. I tend to use my big ones like the 75 or the 8OT fairly indiscriminately, as I do with some lockbacks and large trappers. I have no plans to sell these knives in the future and I imagine a lot of the ones that show up for sale were also originally intended to be used until worn out.

A SWEEET knife in sweet home Alabama. That one is definitely sweet. I kinda like Schatt & Morgan. Have one of their 43 1/2 and love it.

It's a beautiful knife with fantastic matched stag. And I'm a big fan of the aesthetics of S&M and most Queens.

But is anyone else a little disconcerted by the slanted/fluted bolster on one end and the typical straight/unfluted bolster on the other?

I think I could get over it, considering how the burned portion of the stag on both sides matches the angle of the slanted bolster. But in the spirit of honesty that's the one critique that jumped out at me upon seeing the knife.

I'd still probably carry it in a heartbeat and I'm glad you found it, especially in these sad times when we are saying goodbye to Queen seemingly forever.

Looks like ya grabbed a nice one Chris. I like the blade profile and the thin stag. I have a couple burnt stag S&M knives with the fat stag and it taught me a couple of things. First lesson was that I'm not a fan of fat stag and the second was don't buy a knife online if the seller doesn't post a pic of the knife at an angle that shows the thickness.

Couple of minor (to me) issues. Rather large crack on the pile-side at the bottom bolster.
Blade has some slight wobble. I've gotta work on the gritty walk.
BUT, at the $$ I paid for a user.

Recently arrived, 3 7/8" closed, I've been told this was probably made by Schrade. The serrated secondary was what really attracted me to it, the dark wood handles are nice too, (Walnut? Oak?).
