Case Tested XX
Here are a couple of old Case knives you collectors may like to see. One is a Budding & Grafting knife marked MAHER & GROSH. Since MAHER & GROSH was a wholesale company and contracted their knives to established manufactors, I'm guessing it was made by CASE in the TestedXX era. It is identical to the one by CASE in Sargent's books. The other one is a Tested XX Case Office knife with Ivory handles and Advertising on the handle instead of "OFFICE KNIFE". Enjoy.

I really should let my cousin who has a pecan orchard answer this one, but I am going to take a shot at it.
The separation of the blades is to insure a uniform cut of the bark as the knife or knives, circle the limb. This enables the person preparing the graft to have an evenly prepared surface with which to begin the grafting process.
