camillus #72

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

Quoting Greg: "Those are all first generation bone handled 72's likely made in 1946. You can tell because the pen blade and the master are paired on one side and the coping blade is the single."
Somewhere in this thread i posted my bone handled Craftsman 9529 which is a Camillus #72 pattern knife. It has a long pen blade paired with the master clip blade and coping on it's own at opposite end. Master clip has a full flat grind both sides & swage starting at proximal end of nail nick, both sides.
So is this a 1946 knife ? Based on what i know of the Craftsman knives 1946 is in the correct time range.
1946 was also the year i came out so the '46 72'ers are extra special to me !

Roland are you talking about one of these two that I bought from you? The first one a true whittler is etched on the blade Craftsman 9529 and the second has no pattern number on it. Both have bone handles.

Greg, the knife i am asking about is set up as a 72, but with the pen blade with the clip. It is a bit odd that Craftsman used the same pattern # for both a true whittler and a 72 style knife.
I will try to take pictures in the morning.

Here is the Sears Craftsman 9529 with pen blade next to flat ground master clip blade.
And when looking in the back of an old bookcase i found 2 more 72's both NIB (but original box ?), an Ole Smoky and a yellow Delrin. Do these have stainless blades ?

Roland, that certainly looks like the same thing as the 1946 first gens If I am not mistaken I think Jerryd believes that the whittler like you sold me was the predecessor of the 72 in the Camillus line so that could be the reason that Craftsman has the same pattern on them. I don't know for sure about the steel used for Ole Smokey and the yellow handled one but my guess would be carbon steel since they are not marked Stainless.

I got this one in today. It's a Camillus made Remington R14 to complement the rest of my Camillus 72 collection. It looks as though the tang marking was etched and now is barely visible.

Grant were all of those etched like that? They must have been made near the end.

I think they were made towards the end.The last Camillus tang stamp was etched.
If you look at the finish.(pins through bolster )the earlier 72 had a better finish.

Don't know for sure of course but that's never stopped me from guessing. Maybe got an order for a run of Remingtons toward the end and scrounged up enough main blades to fill the order. Had a dukes mixture of tang stamps on them so they ground off the stamp and etched on Remington. Just maybe the blade for Greg's knife already had Remington stamped on it and they noticed that just before they got it ground off. Hey, it's not a half bad story.

They got a little heavy handed with mine.

I did get That one Grant. I was intrigued by the full milled liners. Not partial milling like the Deluxe models Camillus made. What do you make of that? Something special for Sears maybe? It hasn't arrived yet but I will certainly post it when it does.

To me it look like Camillus made a few knives for different hardware stores. When these knives where made I am not sure.
The first first generation Camillus was made around 1946.Were the cardon USA knives made before than your guess is as good as mine.I have a True Value one with milled linesCan't show a picture as knife is in storage.
Jerry has a carbon USA , he might have more information.

Grant I have this 4 line Sword Brand that I assume was made 1941-46. It's got the funky composition stag but it does have milled liners. Perhaps that's just the way they made them then.

Roland I suppose as long as you indicate that you will ship international that your listing is posted everywhere. Grant copied the listing from his Aussie computer.

Tommy perhaps that means that the 72's with milled liners were kind of like transition knives with Camillus using up the last of the milled liners. ::shrug:: ::nod::

kj. You can use your eBay sign in detail to sign into any ebay site.
It than all comes down to how a seller lists a item.
For example if I go to the USA ebay site without logging in I will see all the listings, when I login some of the listings disappear. The rest of the listings state if the do or don't post to Australia.

Are the handles yellow Delrin ? or white ?
I have not seen a BSA 72 with the same handles, only with jigged Delrin to resemble bone.

This is Ivory Delrin. In 1980, BSA decided that all knives should be of this color, but after 1982 they returned back.
