I picked up a white bone handled canoe knife and decided to dye it to a appaloosa bone yesterday. Very easy to do and takes only about 20 minutes or less to change the look of a knife. Of course I forgot to take before pics but here are a couple after pics. Turned out pretty nice I thought.

Thanks Ivoryman. Yes it is very much like the bone on the #56 appaloosa I recently got, maybe I'll get a side by side pic for comparison.

Thanks Steve, the dye procedure is pretty simple and goes like this;

Put the knife in a sauce pan with enough water to cover it by about a 1/2", add a couple drops of dish soap and heat slowly on the stove until the water
just starts to show tiny bubbles of boiling. Simmer for 5 minutes.
Put a few ounces of liquid dye (I used Rit dark brown) in a coffee mug along with a pinch or two of table salt.
After the knife has heated for the 5 minutes pour some of the hot water into the mug with the dye and submerge the knife in the mix using tongs.
You can take in out in a few minutes or put it back longer if you want it darker (I think I went about 5 minutes on mine).
Wipe the bone and the blade clean with a paper towel or soft cloth. Wait for it to cool and then rinse it all well with clean water and dry.

Try this at your own risk. I've done about 5 knives this way and so far no problem other than one glued shield popping off. Notice the canoe knife I showed above is a $12.00 Rough Rider But I also did a couple of my nice knives too after experimenting on the cheap one first.
