Saw Goldflake Centennial 1989 Case w/ celluloid?

I stumbled on one, and decided to search for more on ebay......do these have celluloid scales that come unglued?

I use unglued as my fav word to describe breaking down,, coming apart, getting mad, etc.....

Most volatile outgassing CASE knives I have come across Scott. I had three as I recall (at least two for sure) that completely imploded. Thankfully no other knives affected.

Steer clear of these in my opinion.

Pretty sure Parker SR was in charge at the time of release. I know a bit about CASE history but not really something I study closely.

I think they made 500 serialized sets of 100 knives. I have about 20 or so of same serial number. The lack of quality for a centennial knife is dumbfounding. All have very weak to zero snap. Embarrassing!

Most of the knives in the set are red bone but not old school red bone. Real bright red.

i have little if any knowledge on Case Knives during any era but have become slightly keen to knives made when he was president of WRCASE.
I know that are sub par and don't bring what pre 1980 Case knives do.

And you'da thought with the problems with celluloid gassing out that he would have avoided it whole heartedly, but has ruined that release....too bad.

I cannot say for sure but I think 1989 was the year he bought Case,,,,,
I know a fella I met trading knives with,,, a friend of his had a huge
knife roll of really scarce Case XX knives all ruined from a deal like that,
like 4 or 5000 bucks worth,, enough to make a fella plum sick

Scott, I did a little research about this on the Case Collectors Club forum. Found an old thread discussing a 1989 Centenial pattern GS279 knife. According to that discussion it is in fact celluloid. The OP there was asking about out-gassing damage. Unfortunately i could not access the picture of the knife because it was on *#%^+# photobucket so it couldn't be seen.

Yes those were made when Parker owned Case. He was responsible for all of the "Centennial" knives. He must have gotten that goldstone material from Germany, real celluloid and outgasses terribly. Similar to what was used on the Case Classics a couple years later.

I have a doctor knife and 3 lobster patterns that were Case Goldstone made when Parker owned Case.
They outgassed very badly. I had Elvis rehandle them.
I also have another doctor (GS285) Gladstone from the same time period that I got from Elvis. It is still in perfect condition.
Go figure.
