Insurance?

hey everyone,

I was just taking all new pictures of my knives for my new website on free webs. and it just hit me. I have a lot of money just sitting in my living room w/ out any insurance on them. What do you all do for insurance? Do you cover them through your homeowners or do you go through a more independent company that specializes in knife ins.?

Get ahold of the company that you have your homeowners with and Iam sure they can attach a rider to your policy for your collectables,firearms,art work,ect.ect.ect. There are also companys that specialize in this type of insurance. Ive seen the ads in Knife World Mag. Hope this helps, Mikek

In addition to an insurance rider I have a 600LB fireproof steel safe with 7 case hardened locking lugs. An assortment of rifles, pistols, and shotguns completes the "protection package".

Insurance? Insurance? We don't need no stinking Insurance!

I've got a Remington model 870 shotgun, loaded with 00 buck that's NEVER failed to fire when the trigger has been pulled, and an ol' hounddog that can smell the crack of daylight and lock on to a scent trail like a snapping turtle to a stick. They might get'm but, I'll find them, and they'll wish they had never been born with hands to pick something up to steal it.

I raised the "contents" coverage of my homeowners policy to cover all my stuff in case of fire. Even a "fireproof" gun safe has to be a damn good one to withstand the temperatures in a home fire.

As far as theft goes, that's where the safe comes into play. I put all my stuff away (in the gun safe) if I leave the house for any extended time. A good alarm system helps also. Photo everything, copy to disk and store one at Mom and Dads, a brothers, wherever..................just out of your home.

I found that riders to my policy are very burdensome. I need appraisals for everything, cumulative for groups of knives over $2,500. It got pretty ridiculas, so we simply up-ed the contents coverage.

Ask your insurance man/woman a lot of questions, get everything in writing. Insurance companies vary so much in policy it's unreal, I only know about mine.

Shotguns work if your home, awake, and the gun is no further than arms length away (I have one (3) of those also.)

Then, if you travel to shows with some of your collection that's a whole new can of worms.

Yes, a fire would destroy many knives. My safe is rated for a fire at 1800F for 30 minutes and the maximum temperature after 30 minutes inside the safe will be 300F. Good bye celluloids and those are VERY good numbers for a gun safe. Mine is primarily a theft deterrent - not to save anything from fire. It was made by Sentry some years ago. 3 big locking rods on the side, 2 on the top and 2 on the bottom.

Torched stag anyone?

Maybe I should be like my brother and get a S&W .50 cal. It's not really pleasant to shoot.

Try http://www.collectinsure.com. They will cover your collection at home as well in transit by mail or to and from a show.

Thanks for the info.When i built my house i put in a concrete room under the front porch. which was going to serve as my knife room, but i was worried about the moisture. I thought about buying a good safe but i like looking at my knives to much. And i have a pistol or two.( But i have two young n's) so they are lock away. with the bullets locked in a different cabinet. So before i could do anything with them. the Burglers would be long gone.

Anyway I am going to call state farm in the morning. and if they can't do anything for me i will give the website knife collector put up a try.

If they get past my rather ill tempered Husky, and my even more ill tempered wife and her .357, I have a rider on my insurance.
