I shoot a rifle and shotgun as a lefty. Only thing I do lefty as I am right hand/left eye dominant. That is why I prefer ambidextrous on semi auto rifle like an AR or on a shotgun, a tang safety. If it ain't on the gun, I adjust accordingly.

I would be lost if I tried to convert to a left handed bolt for hunting though.

Glad I'm not the only one like this (though I think we're a rarity). It has made shooting friends' rifles difficult on more than one occasion, but I have learned to coexist with a few standard right-hand bolt actions out of necessity.

I believe the first Springfield Armory M1A's were put together from original M14 parts and new receivers. At one time a at gun shows you could buy all the parts with a original receiver could in two.I have seen guns put back together with welded receivers.I saw one at the last Ohio Gun Collectors Show with a welded TRW receiver.I wouldn't want to shoot it.

It is all muscle memory for me now if not an ambidextrous gun. Funniest right hand eject left handed shots were from a Barrett 82A1 .50 BMG. Bucket list item. As it got to be dusk, I realized as a lefty the flame blast to the face I endured. Do it again in a second.

I had the same issue firing an old Italian 20mm Anzio anti-tank rifle. Thankfully the rifle is SO long that the bolt/ejection port is further away than the port on the Barrett, but it still made for an interesting experience.

Very nice Ken! Congratulations on that pickup. Great maker also. Man that is sweet.

Personally my favorite caliber to carry. Potent to say the least. Coupled with some high FPS 185 or 220 grain and life is good. I use Buffalo Bore JHP, R.I.P. or 220 bear loads for EDC. A mag of each. I shoot SIG 185 grain for the range. Best caliber in a slide gun in my opinion.

I've been yearning for a 1911 for a looong time, and the Rock Island is high on my list of contenders. The Rock Island is one of the few handguns that the great state of kommiefornia will allow me to purchase. If I do it, I would need to go with a .45 or 38 Super, the 10mm is not on that @#$% roster. I probably wouldn't go 10mm anyway, the few times I have shot 10mm it wasn't a comfortable caliber for me.

Not a 1911 guy myself as I do not like SAO. Prefer DA/SA with a hammer. No striker fires for me either. That said to each his own. But if I did get one it would be the Coonan in .357 Magnum. .357 slide gun.

I have 1 1911 type, a Kimber Custom II. Bought it when they were introduced. Chambered in the 45ACP. Have thought the 38 Super would be a good round in a 1911 type. That Coonan handles a rimmed cartridge?

Hey Steve,

Standard .357 magnum my friend. I think only 2 makers have a .357 slide gun, Coonan and Desert Eagle. Some of the Desert Eagles are really heavy in the 4 to 5 pound range for obvious reasons such as caliber. I will stick with SIG P220 Reverse Two Tone Elite in 10 mm. Just can’t justify the cost of the Connan when I can throw larger 185 grain at 1300 plus feet per second. That is if you don’t mind an EDC that is 4 ounces shy of 3 pounds.

Ever use the website Ballistics 101? Very cool site. That is how I choose my ammo for range and defense. Big fan of Buffalo Bore, Double Tao, etc for defense or carry, Usually use SIG Ammo at the range.

Not trying to preach calibers to everyone but I just find the comparisons interesting. Everyone has there preferences.

I do have a SIG 45, 9mm I carry. Also Dads old Colt Python and Diamondback. Just gravitate back to the 10mm based on the sheer ballistics.

Nothing wrong with 38 Super for sure. Great gun for sure. I am a fan. Don’t own one at this point.

My deceased brother had a Desert Eagle in 357. Never understood that but wasn't my gun to buy. I would have gone with the 50 AE if I were buying that beast. I do have to admit it was more fun to shoot full house 357 mags through that than through my GP-100. I may be a little recoil shy.

Jerry Mikulek (sp?) has a video on the Coonan. He found he had to change his grip because of the stout wallop. When a great pistolero like JM finds the recoil impulse challenging I am pretty sure it would be beyond my competence. After he changed his grip he completely mastered the beast with his usual high speed high accuracy. I love the concept of a 1911 firing standard .357 ammo. The gun handled by JM performed beautifully. And I find it a very handsome gun.

I'm sure the selection had *nothing* to do with H&K building the brand new factory near Fort Benning.

They will never go back to 7.62 for a service rifle. They want the ammo lighter not heavier. That's why they spent years trying (unsuccessfully) to produce rifles and LMG that use caseless ammo. A caseless, or electromagnetic railgun in 7.62 would be pretty cool.

I'm with you - I think the 5.56 is not enough gun when 200 lbs of meat is trying to kill you. Have you seen all the junk they make the kids haul around on their backs, chests and around their waist? They look like they are going for a moonwalk not on patrol.

I don't but I do have a friend who hunts with a Smith & Wesson M&P (AR15) in .223. He's had good success using it too.

Cant use a semi in Pa.. Bolt or pump or single shot.. These are long guns.. You can use a revolver or single shot handgun.. Center fire only.. No rim fires..John

And they're worried about the weight of the ammo? Cut back on some of the other crap they carry and give 'em a real rifle & ammo. Need some experience here to tell us how much is aimed fire against how often they go into "spray and prey" mode when in a fire fight.
