For prying open the backs of electronic gadgets (to change the batteries) the flat head screwdriver blade is vastly superior (should be read with sarcasm dripping)! I suspect that's as close to using a screwdriver as many get nowadays.

Good answers, all; thanks for taking the time. I do have an official scout knife with phillips by Camillus in the car. I believe the mountain knives by Ulster USA had one in WWII. One place I have to have a carefully fitted screwdriver (several, actually) is for firearms. Screwdrivers in knives are really just fair compromises for the real deal, anyway. And of course we have all seen knife blades used as screwdrivers!

A very few 'scout' or utility knives have phillips screwdriver blades. Why do makers continue to make these utility knives with standard screwdrivers for slotted head screws. No one (to speak of) has built anything with slotted screws for decades. There was a military knife offered in the 1940s that already had a phillips screwdriver. I think I understand that the phillips blades are a more difficult and expensive thing to do, but multitools and 'swiss army' knives have them. Why does the iconic 'scout' knife persist in this nonsense?

A more pertinent question for me is why does anyone manufacture anything with Phillips head screws anymore? Give me Robertson or Torx anyday.

For being identical knives it's interesting to me how much variation is in them. One is 1921-1924, the other is 1935-1940. One shield is upside down the other is right side up. Different pulls, different swedges, different pattern number stamp font. Just interesting to me.

Hate to break it to you Keith but the master blade on the short nail nick knife is a replacement , look at the pen blade with the early UMC tang stamp same knife , also the bail is incorrect .
Nice restoration and would make a great EDC piece .

First time post: Writing from Northamptonshire England, I recently found an old Girl Guides knife in a local antiques shop and having an interest in knives and a small collection I couldn't resist the £2.50 price tag. I recognized the style of knife as one mass-produced for the Girl Guide movement - similar to the old military style of knife. When I tried to do research on the knife I could find no other knife which just had the word "GUIDES" on the scales,the all say "GUIDE KNIFE", "GIRL GUIDE or "GIRL GUIDES". Cleaning up the blade I noticed that the knife was made by none other than the famous William Rodgers company of Sheffield, a company with an impeccable and historic pedigree. Well, there's a lot of information about the company, their products and their history but I can find no mention of them making a 'Guides' knife at all.

I know this forum is predominantly US-based but I'd appreciate any help at all with this. Hopefully the pictures will help. Thanks.

Welcome to AAPK "whitebandana" We have many European collectors here, welcome aboard.

I imagine the only reason you have not received any information is because your "Guides" knife is a very rare knife and not too many of them exist here in America. Normally the members here at AAPK will chime in right away to assist and help.
There are many Boy & Girl Scout knife collectors here but most only collect American made knives pertaining to Scout Knives.
I searched all my resources and came up with nothing to compare.
I did however learn a lot about English Scouting.
Your cost of £2.50 ($3.50) was a great deal. I would say it is worth at least £30.00 - £32.00 ($45.00) perhaps more.
Would like to see pictures of your other knives when you get the opportunity.

By the way:
We used to be close neighbors, I was stationed at RAF Chelveston near Rushden in 1968 /1969 and then transferred to RAF Alconbury in 1969 /1970.
