Northwoods Scagel Identification

Does anyone know where I can find a COMPLETE list of all the Scagel Reproductions produced by Dave Shirley at Northwoods Knives. I'd like to have photos if possible and complete descriptions. I have a couple of folders which I think are in the wrong boxes.

Here's my list, but keeping up with the releases has been confusing, no guarantees on this but I think its pretty close. I don't have a list on the ivory, bone or other special releases of these knives..

Scagel # 1 – 2-blade folder – Nov 2004
Scagel # 2 – fixed 4 ¼” blade – bird & trout – Feb 2005 – blade reads “2004”
Scagel # 3 – single-blade folder – May 2005
Scagel # 4 – 2-blade folder w/bolster – July 2005 – “Third Series Folder” on box
Scagel # 5 – fixed 4 ¼” blade –Bird & Trout" in the brochure
Scagel # 6 – fixed blade w/folder – March or April 2006 – “Scagel Prototype” in the brochure - folding blade reads "2005"
Scagel # 7 – fixed 4 3/4" blade – July 2006
Scagel # 8 – 1-blade barlow, English jack – Nov 2006 – “Series #8” on box
Scagel # 9 – fixed 6 3/4 “blade – Dec 2006 - on the brochure insert
Scagel #10 – Original Stag Safety Folding Knife, less than 100 – May 2007
Scagel #11 – Stag Folder With no bolsters, less than 200 – Jan 2008

I have all those except #1. Also I just bought from Dave Shirley a #8 in Impala jigged water buffalo horn. If I can shrink the photo enough I'll attach it. Shirley told me that they made only 5 with this handle material and one of them broke during construction. It is identical in size to the #8 in stag.

I was just looking at that last night thinking that I need to pick that up when I get a little spare change...Great pickup DF, you have a rare one there for sure...1 of 4 now...

Maybe Upnorth will grace us with his Ivory version of that big barlow...He doesn't know it yet but he has that written down for me in his will...

Very nice...Here is the rogers jigged bone version I have of that beautiful impala...

Here is the #10 Scagel folder, this is one I don't have..I included a brief description of the knife as well..

The new Scagel Series #10. The safety guard is more like a sheffield guard. The liners and bolsters are steel. Silver arrowhead, 1095 steel blade, awsome stag as we would expect from Northwoods knives. The production run is only 100 pieces total in stag only and I think even that came up short. The retail price is set at $425.00.

Ralph,

Why do you call this knife new? Is it a re-issue of this one I've had it in my collection for several months now? I'd call #11 new. My photos are terrible compared to yours but here is my knife and box. It doesn't say "prototype". It does say 1 of 100. I have found Scagel boxes to be quite a puzzle. I also have a flimsy looking sheath with a Northwoods embossed thereon. You must remember that I am newly afflicted with this knife collecting. I tried the "cure" but fell off the wagon. My problems is with "enablers" like you, Davidson, Horn, Bohn and my sons. Oh Well!

As you can see I am also making rookie mistakes in adding photos. I know how to preview the post but not how to remove duplicate photos or photos of the wrong knife. Maybe Bryan can add a "How do I delete a picture" buttton.

Hey Don I robbed that picture and knife description off another forum that's why it says new release...I just copied and pasted it...

I don't even have one of the #10 Scagels, I didn't have the funds at the time they were released..

Your pictures are improving everytime I see you put one up. When you accidently put up the wrong picture go to your edit button and click on it. Then look down below the area where you type your words and there will be a place that says delete attachment, click on this button and the picture goes away...

You have yourself an impressive knife Don, I am curious to see how these price out in a few years...?

Thanks for the offer, Tank but I never get up on Turnip Trucks! Your fellow Tennessean, Bill Horn at Cumberland Knife Works has a Scagel #8 in Stag on his web site now for $199. I don't think you will find one cheaper these days.

I've been waiting for more of these to show up, but I have yet to see others!
When the Scagel repros first came out of Dave Shirley's shop, a few odd samples were made. Approx. five of the first 2-blade folders, in Ironwood, and a similar number, same size, but single-bladed, in stag.
They were sold in a black box, at a premium price of course. Has anyone else around here purchased one, or seen one??

I'm relatively new to Scagel collecting and have never seen a black boxed knife. Someone who might and doesn't always watch this forum is Bill Horn at Cumberland Knife Works. http://www.cumberlandknifeworks.com/

He told me today that about 3 years ago he started buying Sacgels and had about 20 #1's, sellling them for $185. All sold of course by now. (Horn is known for his well priced knives. For example he has the new #11 in Stag for sale now for $139) He didn't mention it but it might be worth contcting him regarding the black boxed Scagels. Since the knives aren't numbered on the tang it's sometimes hard to identify them. I've received knives in the wrong boxes. BTW I just checked and found that I paid $274 a few months ago for my #10 which is now being offered for $475. I don't know who will pay that much for one but if that becomes the market, it bodes well for those of us who have a drawer full of Scagels.

I talked to Dave Shirley at Northwoods this morning and he told me that the black Scagel boxes are quite rare. He thinks that there were only about 20 of them. Not sure about value.

I talked to him after you DF, and through stretching our memories a bit (both of us are well over 60!) we calculated 3 wood 2-blades (cocabola, not ironwood; my bad), and 8 stag 1-blades.
