A Couple New Ones from My Shop

Post by orvet »

I haven’t posted anything in here in a long time because I haven’t felt like working on knives. When you are blessed with three chronic autoimmune disorders you kind of have to bide your time and hope they all ease off together so that you can get out and do the things you like to do, in my case working on knives.

Recently I have begun to feel better, the rheumatoid arthritis has eased off and with the exception of tendonitis in my right arm I am actually feeling good. I begun to work on projects that do not involve customers knives to see what my hands are capable of this point in time.

I did a couple of knives recently, the first one is been setting on my bench for months waiting for me to feel like finishing it. It’s a Camillus CP77, the large boot knife with the powder coated finish. The blank came out of the Camillus auction at the bankruptcy sale. The handle is red and black layered micarta. The micarta is kind of funky stuff to work with, I wish the layers were thicker so we would see more color and the powder coated blade is pretty funky to work with also. You don’t dare touch the blade with an abrasive or anything because you cannot polish it out. Anyway I guess it came out okay.
I’m not sure what you would call a black powder coated blade with a black and red layered micarta handle.
I suppose Funky Ninja would be just as good a name for this knife is anything.

The second knife is a fish fillet knife. The blank is a Schrade Uncle Henry 167, handles are Culpepper’s Amber’s CSB with mosaic pens, and the sheath is about my fourth attempt at making a complete sheath from scratch. I euphemistically referred to the sheath style as “functional rustic.”
I did line the inside of the sheath around the handle with soft leather so that the rivets would not come in contact with the bone handles and damage them. I think the sheath is a good heavy duty functional sheet, but it probably won't win a beauty contest!

I haven't etched the blade of the 167 yet with my mark.
It's impossible for me to etch the powder coated blade so I will leave my name off of it.
I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Both of those look great! Good to see you back in the shop, even if it's only your own projects. I like the dagger!

(The sheath isn't that bad, about the quality I am capable of :) )

100% cool!

That 167 Fillet knife is one of my all time favorites. That is the first "fancy" knife I ever bought myself. I could never quite get it sharp enough tho.
How is the edge to work with on yours?

Oh, don't sell yourself short on the sheath. For just a fourth attempt is is great. Imagine the tenth! ::super_happy::

Thanks guys, I appreciate your kind words and the encouragement. ::nod::

I made another sheath right after I made the sheath for the filet knife, I had actually started it before the filet knife sheath was finished. It was for a West-Cut 645, a little Bowie style knife. The knife actually threw me off a little bit, I know West-Cut was an economy line of Western States so I figured the handle on this knife would be plastic like it is on most of the inexpensive Imperial knives made in this pattern. When I picked the knife up I did a double take because of the weight of the handle and took a 45 power microscope to the handle along the spine of the blade where it had been hafted. Much to my surprise this handle is bone, not a composite. I was even more surprised because it is in such excellent condition, I don’t see a single scratch in it.

This sheath was much simpler and easier to make, as it did not require molding the leather to shape it. I used an old sheath for the pattern. The rivets on the strap of the sheath are also covered with soft leather to prevent scratching the bone handle.
Because of the design of the second sheath it did not require a liner. The sheath for the fillet knife however did require a liner that I purchased from Thompson’s Scandinavian Knife Supply. http://www.thompsonsknives.com/ It’s the only place I have seen that actually sells sheath liners. Because of the use of the liner it was necessary to mold & shrink the leather to get a good fit around the liner.

Both sheaths are handmade and hand sewn. I drilled the holes in the leather so that they were not so large as when they are made by a punch. All in all I was pleased with the results of both sheaths and I learned quite a bit while making them both.

I am sure that in starting a new shop I will have a lot of free time in the begining.
Sheath making is something I plan to use to fill that time.

I did a bunch of leather crafting in High School but nothing since then so seeing the things I like in a sheath is very helpful.

What I like about yours is the heavy thread you use. It shows up as a feature
The rivets. Not all makers are using them, Also the fact that you mentioned liners for the blade, and the rivets/snap. I have a sheath for a knife (skinner/bone handle) that I worry about the snap back on the dyed bone. Now I know the solution...
Thanks for posting this. :D

Very nice work, Dale. Glad to read that you are feeling better. I like the rustic sheath for that fish knife.
