Could not resist...what is this?

Post by Ribbit »

Impulse purchase here.
Noticed the handle and the fancy work on the end and bought it. Cleaned it up a bit and 'commenced to whet it.
This knife is very well balanced and will make a great beaver-skinner.
No stamps, no indication at all who/what/when concerning the maker.
Carbon steal is holding a nice edge so far.
Any ideas, etc?

Have one almost identical to it except for the end cap.Only markings are,"Made in Western Germany" which says it was likely made sometime after WWII and probably in the 1950's.Scary sharp.

I'm not sure exactly where I saw it, but I believe there was a knife a very similar design made by Marbles that was called a fish knife.
Maybe one of the Marbles collectors will know the knife I'm speaking of.

Look at the seventh post down on this topic, the post by knife7knut, I believe that is one of the original Marble's fish knives.

Dale:Although it looks similar to the Marble's fish knives I don't believe they had anything to do with these.

What I was thinking Ray was that perhaps the OP knife was an attempt at a copy of the Marbles fish knife.

As I said, there are no obvious markers stamps on this, but it is one fine made knife. The "balance" embedded into the wood tells me someone took some amount of pride in the making.

I have seen these described as used by glaziers for molding shaping, cutting lead in the making of glass windows with strips of lead; or lead/glass lamp shades.

Kootenay hit it.
They're called lead knives. Here's a close copy on Amazon.

That is just what it is. I built stained glass windows for 15 years. The end is weighted to hammer in horseshoe nails to secure work to board. Brings back good memories
