When is a Hawbaker not a Hawbaker?

Whatever, she's one fine knife. Durned shame the handles, while beautiful, are Celluloid.

You are correct Jerryd. There were also some authorized Queens as well.

Case did indeed make these on contract for Hawbaker. At one time or another so did Schrade, York Cutlery, and Queen. There may have been others. I believe Case had the contract the longest and probably made more of them than anyone else, but I could be wrong. They were sold by Hawbaker through his sporting goods company, but not sure of where else.

I recall seeing the same pattern for sale at other outlets, but some companies marketed the knife as an "Improved Muskrat", without Hawbaker's name on them. I've read somewhere that Case gave Hawbaker exclusive rights to the pattern, but not sure if that's true.

Of course I remember, that was the point of the OP. If the knife is not authorized by the Hawbaker family to use of the "Hawbaker" name, it is NOT a Hawbaker. Canal Street was the last authorized to make the knife for Red Hill Cutlery.

It seems as if the term "Hawbaker" has almost become more of a description of a particular muskrat pattern that has one clip blade and one sheepfoot blade to distinguish it from a regular muskrat which has two clip blades. Although this may technically be a trademark infringement on the Hawbaker name, it's kind of similar to how other brand names throughout history have become more common than the actual name of the item itself through widespread use. Like Kleenex for tissue, or Band-Aid for bandage or even Aspirin which was once a brand name for the drug acetaminophen. Some of you older folks will probably remember using other brand names to describe certain items like a Davenport or a Fridgidair. When I was a kid, many of my friends would say "Coke" to refer to any soft drink or soda pop, as in, "Hey, grab me a Coke outta the cooler," even though all we had was orange soda and root beer. It's possible that many people simply call a muskrat with a clip/sheepfoot blade combination a Hawbaker.
