I have three or four of the "regular" length horsehead puukkos, they were one of my early focuses in fixed-blades, which actually started before I ever got into traditional OR modern folders. One of them is part of my EDC rotation but due to the sheath style and general logistics I don't find myself carrying it much outside the home. It is a demon slicer with wicked-sharp carbon steel, however, and it gets a good amount of work as a food slicer, parcel opener and occasional potato peeler.

Is that brown handle bakelite, Scott, or something else? It doesn't look as uniformly-colored as the ones I have, almost subtly mottled, but that could be a trick of the light or the camera.

I was wondering the same....is it bakelite? Almost looks like marble, so I'd guess bakelite.....

I couldn't really make out the etchings on the bolster and metal portions of the sheath from your photo, Scott, but depending on the age of your knife I'm fairly sure it would be bakelite. Most of the non-synthetic horsehead puukkos I've seen have leather-ring handles instead (these have eluded me so far), though I'm sure some smaller cutlers might have produced some with bone or maybe even antler. I think most, if not all, of the solid-colored horseheads are some form of composition or another, and most of the early-mid 20th century examples appear to be bakelite or something similar.

Tsar & Scott, the handle material on the puukko may be made from casein which is a protein found in milk. I don't recall if it predated bakelite, but it probably did.

I've had for a long time an old Mauser made in Berlin. It had the barrel cut off behind where the front sight was and the stock cut off some. My cousins husband is selling it for us.
I still have my Moison Nagant for a big boom.

Home from the Cambridge Antique Show in central Minnesota with 7 knives, and spent a little over $100. I found (top to bottom) a KA-BAR lockback with sheath, a Catt. whittler that has seen a fair amount of sharpening but has excellent snap on all three blades and will see some pocket time at work, a Ka-Bar mariners fixed blade, a Valley Forge celluloid Eureka jack, a Kids knife from Germany, an Ulster pearl, and Friedr. Herder Abr. and Sohn sod buster. No real treasures this time but not a shabby mornings haul.____Dave

Interesting bunch of knives but what in the world is a "Kabar Mariners fixed blade"? Almost looks like a kitchen knife from the picture.

Phil, they are a fairly stout sheepsfoot bladed rope knife in a sheath with a good sized marlin spike. This one didn't have the sheath or the spike but I have a nice full set somewhere in my safe along with another single knife that I made a sheath for.____Dave
