Benchmade Rukus

Any of you guys like the Benchmade Rukus? I know that alot of

people complain that it is to big for pocket carry but I find that mine fits

in my Levis front pocket just right!

It definitley is to big to carry

in Dress Slacks or Shorts. Here are it's Stats and picture.

It's a BIG knife. I do like the mini-Rukus though.

I was looking for a BIG tactical folder,

you know, like the one you would take along with a Jerry Hossom Millenium if you were going werewolf hunting in the twilight zone.
Mitch got me looking closely at the Rukus,

but the Ontario Retribution looks good too,

although it's axis lock vs. liner lock.
Is there any other six inch folder I should consider?
Striders and Seres are great but not BIG enough.
I need BIG

Please, no folding bowies with the blade sticking out through the pommel.

Just to add to this here is one that to me looks like she wants to go to work.

I'm with you, justold...I like the design of that DejaVoo a lot. Its very close to a full-flat grind and it looks like you can put your thumb confortably on the spine of the blade for something like whittling. I have yet to see a tactical that has both of those features.

Mitch, how do you rate your Emersons, Benchmades and Al Mars? I get the impression they are the top three production tacticals and I'm trying to figure out which one to go for.

Edgewise, I don't know too much about Al Mar knives, I think Orvet knows about that particular brand. I do know you can't go wrong with Emerson, Benchmade or Spyderco brands for a good everyday carry!

I think of the 3, Emerson's are built the toughest. However some people don't like Emerson knives because of the chisel grind they use on their blades, I don't mind it at all! The second toughest I think goes to Spyderco, they also make some very strong folders with unique designs and shapes. Last but not least, Benchmade always has great quality for a production knife and great designs. I particularly like their models with the "Axis Locks"

Did you ever have one in your hand yet (DejaVoo) ? If not the next knife show you go to look for it and hold her. She's a real peach of a knife.

MITCH RAPP I know you have a thing for good Benchmades as I do for SOG knives. I do not know if I could give a honest opinion like you did about the 3 knives. My AAPK hat is off to you...

I bought a new Mini Benchmade Griptilian about a month ago. I love it!
It fits nicely in my jeans pocket & has big knife cutting power in a smaller size. I use it a lot in my shop. I may have just become a axis lock covert. Easier on the thumb than some liner locks. I like it a whole bunch!

For a bigger size I like CRKT’s Desert Cruiser. Not 6”, (5-1/4”) but it feels like it was custom fit to my hand. I always have liked AUS 8 anyway. It’s a lotta’ knife for nice price, but is too big for me to carry in my pocket.

Sorry Mitch, but I don’t know anything about the “new” Al Mars. New meaning after Al died in 1992. All mine are the older ones. Now the older ones are probably the finest production knives ever made, IMHO. They were certainly better then a lot of the customs of that era. The guy who owns it now has switched makers, and I haven’t bought any to try them out. They look like the old ones, but the new Chinese Schrades look like the old ones…….well from a distance………..without my glasses…………….and with my eyes closed.

I haven’t tried an Emerson…………yet, nor a Spyderco either. Spyderco has always seemed overpriced to me. At least that is the way it seemed to me when I was selling cutlery in the 80s. They were almost as much as an Al Mar, without Al Mar’s quality from what I saw. I will probably try one someday.

Just my opinion, but you can hardly go wrong with Benchmade.

It's posts like these that make AAPK so darned HELPFUL.
I don't care if you are right or wrong; what I want to hear is YOUR honest opinion, and THAT"S WHAT I GOT.

I sure do like the Rukus! Like it so much I have two of them. On both I've added the alternate grips that BM sells for the Rukus. On my first one I have the satin finish plain edge blade with some of the white ivory micarta grips. I've also satin finished the edges of the frame, cut down the axis bar, and polished the blade some. I got another one about a month ago, and it was the one with the BK coating and plain edge. I added the silver twill G-10 grips to it and that was pretty much all it needed. I love to carry them in my rotation. Both are some of the sharpest knives I have and came that way from BM!

Just to add, the Dejavoo is a great slicer, but I fear that it would not hold up as well as the Rukus. The liners are really thin and it does have some flex in it. BM could have really gone with thicker liners, i.e. the 425 which has .080" liners, and the Rukus for an increased blade thickness of .150. Would still haqve made a great slicer with the flat grind. Of course this is my opinion only, and I do like the bigger, thicker, heavier folders.

I did some research and have chosen the Emerson CQC 7A, but I can't find one anywhere.
A close second was the Benchmade Presidio.
I also have my eye on the classical Emerson A100, "coming soon," not soon enough.

Interesting thread boys...

Some years ago, I looked for quite some time to find what I'll call my "defensive folder." That knife turned out to be the Benchmade Mini TSEK. Perfect for my hand in size and feel...and I could open it with a "Frisbee Throw" snap of the wrist. If I carry that style of knife anytime, it is the TSEK or (with shorts and such) the lighter Spyderco Native lockback (WalMart...$40) with S 30V steel.

I also have an early Emerson Mini CQC-7 BTS, before the wave feature, that is a well-built, fast in the hand knife. I got it especially because the blade was just under 3". I have never really used it, but I wouldn't hesitate to do so, based on quality.

All three of these knives seem to be good examples of the Brands, at their best.

As always, JMO.

An Emerson like the Comrade, with its .125 thick titanium frame-lock

, would be the perfect EDC, and there would be no need to buy aother folder,... .ever.

I feel strangely drawn to it (who wouldn't ?), though it's a bit of over kill. Of course, I wouldn't be able to EDC it for fear of losing it, one way or another.

Bill, you can update your CQC 7 BTS with a new HD 7 edition also with a .125 titanium frame-lock.

For folder strength, I usually look at blade thickness and handle materials.
The Emerson knives don't seem to go thicker than .125 inch.
The Al Mar Nomad, with its 3" blade, is even proportionately thicker that the Rukus with its 4.25" blade.
Unfortunately, I don't know much about the axis pins and folder joints, where the strength of a folder is really tested.

While waiting for my chosen but unavailable Emerson to get back in production, I was checking out the Benchmade folders and spied the pink mini Griptilian.

I ordered one without hesitation.

Well, pink is not a macho, tactical colour,

but I shall EDC this one proudly.

Part of the proceeds goes to fight cancer, and who among us has not lost someone to cancer?

And what's more appropriate for a fight than a Benchmade tactical folder?

Great choice Edgewise! When it comes to modern offerings, the BM556 is one of my favorites. Even in pink, its an incredible knife. Mine is the original offering of 440C. They've since upgraded the steel to 154CM. Cabelas has an exclusive version available in D2.

I'd like to get the Cabelas version but its kinda low on the list of future purchases.

As for pink not being a tactical color, I'll give the same response I give in regards to the Lady Smith S&W revolver. I'm not going to point and laugh if a man uses one. Especially if he shows the slightest bit of know-how when it comes to using that pink knife or Lady Smith.

This is one PINK one I have. She is not a Benchmade tactical folder but, I think she is a tactical knife. Kershaw 1660 assisted opening 420 stainless steel blade.

Nice, clean, simple lines on that knife, Justold.
I'm not too familiar with Kershaw but I enjoyed taking a look.
This " offset" also caught my attention; injection-moulded 440C steel with a combination of flat and hollow grinds.

I am a big Kershaw fan. For my money, they are some of the best user knives on the market. They have one ot the highest value-to-dollar ratios of any company on the market today.

The name on that knife, Steven Seagal, is the well known author of a guide to marriage. He suggests that you....."find a woman who hates you, and just buy her a house."

That will avoid causing a "Rukus" I suppose.
