Long-term storage of carbon steel knives

Post by Dan97526 »

Gentlemen,

I'm in the process of moving, and my kitchen knives are going into a storage unit. Please recommend a storage solution to prevent rust since most of my kitchen knives are carbon steel. Specifically, products and how to store. I was thinking a good coat of CLP and wrapping in disposable blue shop towels then in newspaper. However, if there's a better way I am open to suggestions.

Thanks,

Dan

How long do you plan on storing them?What are the temperature and humidity conditions?What type of handle material;synthetic or natural?A lot of variables to consider.

I would wipe the blades with a silicone gun cloth making sure not to touch the blades with bare fingers.I would wrap each blade in waxed paper(just the blade;not the handle).I would wrap the handles in a piece of soft cotton cloth(an old T-shirt cut up).In the box I would put several dessicant bags;the kind you find in electronics gear to keep out moisture.

If there aren't too many of them,you might want to consider buying an old ammo box to store them in.These have great watertight integrity as long as the original seals are intact.Hell I've heard of people storing stuff in them by sealing them in plastic bags and burying them under ground.Hope this helps.

Ammo box! ::dang::

Awesome idea. Thanks, I will put your ideas into action. By the way, I see "Ren wax" referred to a lot around here. What is it?

Dan,

I may be too late responding, and you've already got the knives in storage... but if not, I wanna remind you to CLEAN the blades, first. With something like simichrome or even silver polish. Then you can apply whatever protectant you want.

Don't wrap 'em in newspaper or anything like that - acids in paper will work on them, if they're in storage too long.

Take Care,

Thanks, JR. However, I was unable to part with my kitchen knives. Despite the fact that I won't be cooking for the next month, I just couldn't leave them!
