I have a question about fakes and clones
I saw a small pen knife for sale on eBay with MOP scales and a patent pending number on the tang. The knife maker is not identified. It simply says "certified" on the tang. If the maker is not identified I am suspicious that the patent pending number is faked. Is it possible for a knife to have a fake patent pending number? Apparently, the description of how the knife opens and closes is the reason for the patent. I thought a manufacturer had to identify their product in order to have a patent number. I'm trying to educate myself so I can identify the fakes and clones from the original. I know a lot of items from China are clones and usually they can be spotted by the quality. However, they often make claims to be the original. Does anyone have knowledge about the patenting pending numbers?

In My Opinion (yeah, that and a buck and a half will get you a cup of coffee)
A fake is one that is badged as (stamped, shield and other identifying marks) and made to look like the original but made by God knows who.
A clone is one that is the same pattern as the original but is badged with it's makers marks and not badged as the original.
My definition of badged --- tang stamp, shield, blade etch or any other mark that identifies the maker of the item.

I'very seen some Colonial knives with only patent numbers on the tangs or at least that's what I think they were. You can Google the number and find out what company or person applied for the patent. That might help but the the best way to identify fakes a reproduction is to study many authentic examples of knives in hand and pictures. Before long you will just know the real ones.

Thanks Jerry and Greg! The information was a big help! I have learned so much on AAPK and consider it a very valuable resource. It was a great idea to Google the patent numbers. The knife on eBay was made by Imperial and the patent was from Mirando and Vossler. So it was not a fake after all. Thank you guys again!
