I've always just called them Folding Hunters. I know others sometimes get more specific with adjectives such as Swell center, or clasp or Banana. Sometimes I add lockback to the ones that have that feature. I love what I call the bigger serious "working" knives, although I realize all knives are pretty much working tools. ___Dave

Some people call the curved frame a banana trapper. I would recommend a Levines Guide ( you don't have to buy the IV, which is an expensive collector's edition, any earlier version will do), his pattern nomenclature is " generally " accepted.

Dave is right the standard term for all are folding hunters.

In addition to Banana trapper, clasp knife and folding hunter these knives are often referred to as toad stickers. Nice assortment!

The second knife from the top wouldn't qualify as a banana trapper since it's not curved. I'd call that one a swell-center or a coke bottle.

Dave, I would call it a swell center jack or a coke bottle jack.

Hello, I call this pattern below a Banana knife, Toad-sticker, HOBO or Hunters knife ALSO guys((hint hint Hunting Frogs,,,I From Arkansas boys and YES we hunt these elusive creatures,,,hahaha,,,mmm delicious frog legs w/ butter and Tators and Please dont forget the Cornbread FOLKS)).

A trapper to me Always have 2-blades,,,if its a very small secondary blade(Pen blade or like), Then I thought we call them a 1/2 Trapper or a Large 1/2 Trapper depending on size((Trappers are Hunters TOO,,In Arkansas that is,,,They "Trap" game instead of shooting Game)
I suppose in essence that a "Banana Trapper" is a good term to be used for this 1-blade Big knife,,,,However, for the MAJORITY of Pocket knives, A trapper to me has 2 blades.

A Full Trapper Knife is one having 2 long blades(one Clip and one Spey).

This is just my thoughts only and thought I would take the time to chime in here. I hope noone takes offense for me doing so as I just tryin to be helpful.
Thx Mark

Well said Mark and totally agree. Great old CASEs there. Speaking of which, the books refer to those knives as a singled bladed Hobo.
At one point I seemed to offend a short time PC member by calling it such. Derogatory is the term he used. Really? I thought and told him "get over it" I didn't make the name or the book but I refuse not to use the proper name to satisfy some PC requirements in his narrow minded and fragile point of view.
At least as far CASE is concerned, the knives Mark posted are Hobos.

Regardless of the name given to these knives, they were designed to be used by hunters [trappers] to process animals ie skinning, cutting off there heads and feet, gutting and cutting them into manageable portions for packing. The Case trapper in probably the better known and more utilized in this pattern. The spay blade is used to remove the hide thus "skinner blade". The clip blade for stabbing into the animal and removing head, feet....Being an "O" Kentucky Mountain boy, I grew up trapping muskrats, mink, beaver and an occasional bob cat. Case trapper was as important to a mountain boy as his 22 Remington.

Just an aside on the term, "HOBO"
The great songwriter/poet, Merle Haggard did an album called, "Same Train, Different Time" on which he celebrates the Hobo and the music of Jimmy Rogers. "Hobo" was not a derogatory term. It was used to describe and identify a free-living, "traveling man" who chose the wandering life at a time when staying in one place with no work was a frustrating and degrading existence. The Hobo worked where and when he could find employment.
The term for a "n'er" do well" was tramp or bum, far different from a Hobo. Hobos constituted a subculture. They had rallying points and even appointed times to gather. They took care of each other too. Jimmy and Merle paid respectful tribute to those men.

Yes.
Fellers, I'll have to disagree on calling these beauties "Slim Line Trappers". To me the Slime line trappers are the Case 048 and the Queen 11EO, the #30, etc. Steve Pfeiffer in his book, refers to the smaller 4 1/8" 048 as "slim line". ::shrug::

Sorry Phil, I didn't go back and read any previous posts, I just saw "Is this a Pattern?" and the person just before me wrote Slimline Trapper so I assumed he was asking if that was a pattern name. I should have gone back and looked at the pictures and other posts.

A.G. Russell called his “granddad’s lockback”. I’ve heard the term toad sticker and banana trapper also used for this, not by A.G., just others.

In addition to “Banana Trapper” I’ve seen the curved pattern referred to as a “Single blade hobo”.

J.O., thanks for the informational post. Reminds me of a post I made several years ago in reply to a recently joined (at that time) member who posted that he thought use of the derogatory term “hobo” wasn’t fitting for such an elegant pattern. Here was my reply:
CaseHunter, if it's any consolation regarding your concern about the term "hobo" being unfit for the knife, it may help to have a little perspective or reflection on the history of the timeframe during which these knives were first made, around the late 1800's and early 1900's. The term hobo dates back to that time period also, and was used to differentiate a person who traveled looking for work (a "hobo"), from a "bum" or "tramp" which was someone who worked only when he had to. So in that regard it could be seen as somewhat of a compliment.

I learned a long time ago the dangers of judging our forefathers based on today's moral views.

Just my two cents worth (probably overvalued at that!).
He took offense and was never to be heard from again. ::shrug::

J.O.! I want to thank you for this post regarding Hobos. ::handshake:: My entire life I was under the impression Hobos were bums, tramps, etc., but your explanation of a travelling man looking for work certainly dispels that theory. Makes me feel much better about the time I spent in my younger years as a Hobo! LOL! As usual, I learned something new here today! 8)

Ken, Wow! "Great minds, eh...... That's uncanny! Merle and Jimmy were both passionate in their empathy and respect for the "Hobo".
Marco, Thanks Pal. ::handshake:: J.O'.

Some great songs about Hobos:

"Hobo's Lullaby"-Arlo Guthrie
"The Hobo Song"-Old And In The Way Album
"Hobo Bill"-Jimmy Rogers
"Hobo's Last Ride"-Hank Snow
"Gentle On My Mind"-John Hartford

Sorry to usurp the thread with this ramble. ::facepalm::
