Your opinion please...

[XX Case XX]

I have a Case knife that I believe has a blade that's tipped by the smallest of margins but I can't be sure. Here's a close-up of that blade tip. What do you guys think? (Click on image to enlarge)

Mike I can't be sure. But that could be case, I get the feeling that it may have been tipped. At the same time I get the impression that it was not ground correctly from the factory. Just my 2 cents worth.

I would not call it tipped. I see what you are talking about, but I am guessing it is just the way the blade was ground and polished. Have you compared it the points of some other Case knives that you have?

I pretty much agree with Mel.
Not the best sharpening job ever, but I don't think it was tipped.
Might have been the first one sharpened on Monday morning before the person doing the sharpening had their 2nd cup of coffee.

If it's a newly made case then that is how they all are due to the tumble polishing. If not, then I'd agree with the others in that it was a slight slip of the hand in the factory sharpening and rounded it.

I had not done that until I read all these replies, and I believe you guys are correct. Since it's a Muskrat, I compared it to the other blade and it appears that it was improperly or poorly sharpened, polished, and tumbled.

Looks like a sharpening issue to me. Not sure how tumbling would have that effect. Sharpening is one of the last steps in the knife making process and is a hand operation so there's going to be occasional inconsistencies. Just my opinion.

My latest Buck (a 726) has the exact same tip. After initially thinking it had been dropped on the tip I gave it a close examination and my conclusion was incomplete sharpening - going to fix it with a Lansky. OH

I know for a fact that CASE and Queen (not sure about the other brands) are prone to having poor factory sharpening jobs. I've had them with bevels ground only on one side, with bevels at different angles on the same blade, poorly sharpened tips, and my personal favorite good bevels but the two planes not actually meeting in a sharp edge.

No skin off my nose since I plan on sharpening a new knife before I carry it. It's just become the norm I guess.

1983 Case New Grind.

Same year as my 92033 which has served as a desk knife for the last couple months, also a new grind knife. Oddly enough, the point of the master Turkish clip is needle-sharp on the knife (polished, not as-ground), but the actual grind of the pen blade gives it an extra "pregnant" belly before it leads up to a more subdued point than usual on a pen blade. It's almost like a very small Zulu spear. The knife came super sharp already (albeit unpolished at the bevel) so I use it to carve through envelopes and packages, but when it comes time to put it to the stone I might pay particular attention to that point for a while.

I definitely understand what you're saying Tsar. I would do the same thing and clean it up a bit but I am nowhere close to being that good with a stone. Maybe I'll see if one of the fellas here is willing to take on that task. Thanks for the info.

Yea Wade. I have one Congress from the 90s' as I recall. Missed the sharpening process all together.
