Hammer Brand Knife

Hi,

I need some expert opinions on this knife. I believe it is a Trapper with just the Clip blade, it has a swing guard and a Cigar Band.
It has Hammer Brand and there Logo etched on the Cigar Band. On the front tang it has " Hammer Brand and there logo".
On the reverse side of the tang it has " New York-USA-Knife Co. " Also on the Clip blade it has imprinted on it " Hammer (logo) Brand"

I am trying to find out if possible what year it was manufactured, who manufactured it and what the handle material is? I think it is Mammoth Ivory?

It came in a (2) piece Walden Knife Co. Box ? with a label on the back- Bear & Son-Mother of Pearl Swing Guard and HB811.
I know it is not white mother of pearl.

Does anyone have any ideas of what I have?

Thanks for the information. I attached another picture but the other pictures are as good as I can get. I found if you click on the picture it enlarges and looking at them and reading why write up hopefully it will help give a better description and understanding of what I am asking.-Thanks again everyone.

It may be a reproduction, do you have pictures of it?


Edit: the other part of the box says bear and son so I'm going to assume that's who made it. It it definitely a reproduction either way. Bear & son makes good knives in alabama.

Welcome to AAPK Donald. We're going to need some pictures. Bright, clear, in focus pictures of both sides of the knife with the blade(s) open and both sides of the main blade tang. If posting pictures is giving you trouble, read this tutorial ---> viewtopic.php?f=98&t=50258

I would guess far East made reproductions as these are.

Hey Donald, first off welcome to AAPK, I think you will find this forum informative and fun. What kind of camera are you using? If it is a digital type, try setting it on the "macro" setting (indicated by a flower symbol) for close ups. Then change the background color to maybe black or dark shaded paper. Take a bunch of photo's then put them on your computer and look at them, if they are not in focus, delete and try something different. Also try different lighting. I like bright sunlight but in a lightly shaded area so you don't get any shadows, just practice a lot. That is the nice thing about digital cameras, delete and try again. Good luck, Terry

Those are Bear & Son-manufactured, Hammer Brand imprint knives. I'm guessing Bear either bought or has a deal to manufacture knives under the name Hammer Brand, which used to belong to the real New York Knife Co. Bear has been knocking out a lot of knives under names of old (Keen Kutter, Remington, Hammer, Schrade-Walden, etc.) as have a couple other modern American cutlers. As for the handle material, I've never seen ivory of any kind on a Bear knife but that is far from meaning it doesn't exist, or that they wouldn't trot out the "good stuff" for this line. The handles on yours look really nice.

They are American-made knives. The QC may vary on a lot of them, but it seems like they put more effort into these "homage" or reproduction knives than they do into their own manufactured lines. I might avoid paying premium prices for one of their products but I own a fair number of Bear knives and buy them when the price is right.
