Knife 1. I am not aware of any company named CJ Barber. the CJ in the flag on the bolster was the trade mark of Christopher Johnson. Barber ERA was a completely different company. I recently bought a genuine (or so i think) CJ knife. It is a real project and I will post it when suitable for public viewing.

Knife 2. I am not aware of any company named Pampa Barber. Barber tang stamp again? The 'Pampa Real Knife' and Ostrich was a trademark of Lockwood Brothers.

A possible explanation might be that someone has acquired all of these various trade marks and has put them together in some random fashion .

PA do I get some extra credit for this?

You have brought up a subject I have considered and know nothing about.
English counterfeits, that is.
Ever so often; I see a Horseman's pattern I may be interested in, and I always pass because of that reason.

Hello 9ball. IMO Horseman's knives are not commonly counterfeited per se. However, one must be very careful about replacement blades and other accessories that are not original to the knife. s-k

I understand, or I try too.

For years to me if an item had been apart; Unless the item had been restored with original parts, I considered it Counterfeit. Left-Right, Right-Wrong, Yes-No, Up-Down, etc. etc.
As far as the collector in me knows: A re-bladed knife was/is a Counterfeit. It was or is Restored if original parts were used. That was all I knew, Counterfeit-Restored.
It was not till I found this website that I have learned that there are different types of "Funny" knives.
If that makes any sense

I still need to think on this more.

Hi 9ball. I know exactly what you mean. This is not well thought through and it may not make much sense . I think counterfeit is like those case knives where they are entirely made by someone else to mimic the original. On the other hand (maybe), there are knives that are composed of mostly the original but maybe have a replacement blade or something. Are they counterfeit... a matter of opinion I suppose. Definitely they are not original. Certainly, you and others have brought these issues to my attention and I try my best to avoid both categories so thanks s-k

Here's my 2-cents worth...if the knife is altered in anyway...it isn't to be considered original. At least I don't think of it as original as such....now, I know there are those who do things to knives and resell them as their own work...(a law suit with Case comes to mind) and as long as "THAT" is known to the purchaser, I guess it's a different area all together, just as long as both parties are aware of the alterations. And I think that is the crux of this litigation. However, I prefer to buy original material. It may be more costly....but , ya get what ya pay for in this world !!! "IF" you are well informed, as you will be if you keep abreast of this site. Like I said JMO!!! And now you know the rest of the story....hehehe later, WT3L
