Stockman

Post by jabberwocky »

This seems to be my week for acquiring "Craftsman" knives, for some
reason. In any case, I have a question about the manufacturer of a
stockman knife I purchased yesterday. The knife is a stockman, 4" in
length closed, with a 2 3/4" clip blade, a 2" sheepsfoot, and a 1 3/4"
spey. (stainless)
The tang stamp says "Craftsman U.S.A., with the number 95235 below.
It has dark wood laminated handles with no shields or inlays on either
side, and brass bolsters and liner. The gentleman I bought it from says
it was made for Sears/Craftsman by Schrade. It's a nicely made, solid
knife...nice wood, polished brass.
Is this a "user", or something by Schrade that I should keep in my small
Schrade collection? Thanks for any help!

Hello Jabberwocky, I am pretty sure that they are in fact Schrade manufactured as they did make craftsman knives. You could post a picture or two. I actually just bought a few of these myself on ebay, still waiting on them.

As to whether or not its a user, I don't think they are very rare, but its up to you whether its a "user" or a "drawer queen". I have a number of older schrade stockman patterns that I like use as work knives and others that I just like to look at. Its hard to resist carrying them sometimes. If the knife is mint and you want to keep it that way put it up, but it would make a good user too.

jabberwocky,

There are some really knowledgeable people on schrade here on the forum (Me not being one of them :? ) I am sure someone could tell you what they think on the "carry value" of your purchase. It sounds like it is just a matter of time though before anything schrade will be moving up in value, I guess it's just a matter of how bad the itch to use the knife over putting it away hit's you :) Show us a pic or two on your purchases...

nmikash,

I am digging your avatar ::tu:: I just wish I would have thought about that first, I have started moving in a serious way into the Robeson, mastercraft, pocketease arena. Hey did you know that there are ways of dating knives by how the letters are lined up in the pocketease shield??

Take care,

Sunburst

Thanks for the comments and info, Nick and Sunburst. I have done some
research on the internet in the past couple of days, and it seems that Schrade did, in fact, make these knives. I also read somewhere that a
company called Camillus made some knives over the years with the Sears/Craftsman name on them.
I actually haven't been "collecting" for long at all. A friend brought to my
attention a few months ago that I had "accumulated" quite a substantial
number of knives over the years...that I should keep them all, and start an active hobby out of my "accumulation"...which I now proudly call a collection! I'm in the process now of beginning to educate myself on both
knives, and collecting knives as a hobby. Turns out I have quite a few Case, Schrade, and Kabars (many still mint in boxes), that I hadn't given
much thought to over the years!
This forum will be invaluable to me...I can tell already...and I really just
happened upon it by accident. Thanks again...

Just joining in the fun here...

Camillus actually made some of the first pocketknives for Sears...the STA-SHARP brand (1927-1940). And, Camillus made knives for Schrade...and Schrade made knives for Camillus (families were related, and all that)...and they both made knives for Sears. Whew!!

Anyway here is a picture I had at hand of a STA-SHARP, showing how they used to mill the liners even on inexpensive knives.

This is a really fun hobby...especially now that you're hooked like the rest of us.

You're right, Bill...I'm beginning to see where this hobby can become very addictive! It seems like every new question you have brings with it not only (hopefully, anyway) an answer, but other questions that lead you to other areas of the hobby.

I've already learned that this is an area full of history, also.

Thanks again for the comments and info, guys! This forum is great!

That's the exact knife, Mike! I'm wondering...are you planning on using
your as an EDC or putting it into your collection? Mine started out in my
knife cabinet, but then I started carrying it every so often...it's a very nice knife...good blades.

It looks like an 8OT made for Sears.
It should be a great user, especially if it has carbon steel blades. There were lots of the 8OT's made and probably plenty of the Craftsman version also.

It probably won't be worth a great deal in out lifetimes, but should be a dandy user, irregardless of whether it was made by Schrade or Camillus.

Just my $.02,
