Just how much money have you spent on your collection???

I was reviewing my pricing list I keep on the knives I purchase and I was surprised how much money I have invested in my knife collection. It got me to wondering if I am the only mad knife collector out there or if there are others like me infected with the madness that just won't stop.

I don't keep record of what I pay (maybe I should), usually get them at bargain prices, all but one were under $50. and I have over 300 and most are worth alot more than I paid for them.

Next flea market season I'll have to keep track record of what I pay and at the end of the year see how much I spent, then calculate and approximate market value and see how I did.

I forget where I read it but I think the late Jim Parker preached about keeping a pricing list of the knives we purchase. I missed it on the first year or so but my record keeping improved as time went on..

Kaleb you rascal you, that is flat out highway robbery..

I'll give you $10 for the lot and pay shipping..Just to improve your records that is..

How about that Bradford for a buck!

I think there are many of us here that have 100 knives or more. At $100.00 average that's $10,000. It doesn't take long to invest major bucks in this hobby.

I would really hesitate to even estimate how much money I have invested over the years(50 plus).At last count I had slightly over 2700 knives and even at an average of $5 apiece.........well you get the idea.

I will say that I have never bought a knife that took money away from the household.I have ruefully passed on some knives that I would have loved to have but just couldn't swing.

My ex-wife's attitude was pretty much,"WHAT? You bought ANOTHER F*&*%G KNIFE?" That is one of the reasons she is my EX wife. My current wife is somewhat different: "Do you REALLY need another knife?" A simple YES usually ends the discussion.

About the only thing I do differently now is keep closer track of the relative value of the items I buy.I am also in the process of updating my prior information in case something should happen to me.Given my current state of health,that isn't a bad idea. I have also made arrangements with a fellow knife enthusiast who lives here in town and has known my wife almost as long as I have.He will aid in dispensing with my collection should that ever become necessary.

It may sound a bit morbid,but it isn't a bad thing to consider.When I was diagnosed with cancer 6 years ago,that was one of the things I put into place before having surgery.Not only for my knives,but for my antique automobiles(I have 3)and fairly large vintage record collection.

It is what an old friend used to call,"The Seven P Factor"(which translates as,"Prior Proper Planning Prevents P** Poor Performance").

Sorry for the rant;it's been a weird weekend.

I have a thing for that number...

My records start with the first knife I bought. About 3 years ago when my Dad died with my inheritance to pass on to my 2 Sons.

I sold 3 knives and traded 6 knives and gave away 35 knives.

I gess I am best at giving way knives...

I can't beleive how much I have in my collection. I don't advertise that fact, but I am sure it is more than $10,000. I have good friends that have just one line of antique knives that are more than $10,000 so I don't feel to bad about it. My son likes it when I buy knives as he looks at it as his future $$$$. I might fool him though and give it to the NKCA. the value to me is far more than the $$$ though. I have put a tremendous amount of time and effort in to my collection and with the help of people like you, it as grown. Thanks to all of you as well.

I know one thing---my wife Told me if i PERSIST in buying more knives---she will MESS with my computer--and setup the PARENTAL CONTOL----I'm scared--because i'm AMISH on this thing anyway!!!!!!!!!. MR.FRED.

Hi;
I truly can't imagine how much the dollar figure is. Probably not much as I seem to accumulate more than collect. I started off with old kitchen cutlery and they at the time were a dollar a dozen,then I leaned for awhile toward Indian types when I found out my great great grandpa was among those who were murdered and scalped by Indians in west Texas in 1860's. After that fad I just sort of shotgunned for a time. Recently I have collected and studied early Gerber Knives. In the midst of all this was my military period. The mil. and the Gerbers probably account for most of the dollars expended. Maybe 7-8 thousand.
Who really cares, if it were not fun I wouldn't be in the sport.

starting almost from Day One. It's been a running total through out the

When I first saw the poll, I guessed 2500-5000. I, like many, have kept a tally of coinage spent since day one. I was truly shocked to see the tally (after the calculator) in the next catagory up....... errr ah, WAY up.

Don't see an end in sight anytime soon either!

Oh well, it's only money and you can't take it with you. Can you???
