1095 or D2 for an EDC?

Gentlemen:

I am going to buy a new EDC next week. I have it narrowed down to the Queen mini-trapper in either 1095 or the usual D2. What are your opinions on each for everyday purposes?

I'm quite used to 1095, but if I go with the D2 it will be my first knife in that steel. The 1095 gets points because I read that it is a bit more forgiving of doing 'unknifely things' than D2 (pulling staples?), for ease of sharpening, and for the fact that I tend to seek out carbon steel knives.

The D2 has the advantage of being something new for me, and the high marks it gets by its users. Additionally the mini-trapper in 1095 is a limited edition, and I hate the idea of carrying something I can't easily replace if lost (if you saw my earlier thread on losing EDCs).

Your opinions/advice?

Hi Dan - I generally prefer the high carbon blades myself. I recently got a couple of Queens in D2 and have been pleased, but I haven't had them long enough to worry about resharpening. I have heard they keep their edge longer. So, unless they're just a pain to sharpen I would have to give the D2

I like D2 a lot as I do 1095. Some folks can't sharpen D2 very well. I would say that if you regard 1095 to be easy to sharpen, go ahead and try D2, D2 is merely a step up. If you find 1095 difficult to sharpen, then by all means stay with 1095 until you regard 1095 as being easy to sharpen.

If you have trouble sharpening I would advise looking at the sharpened edge with a magifying glass or an optovisor. Look for different angles along a cutting edge or even rolled metal. A bad sharpening job is very easy to see.

Thanks, guys. Looks like the consensus is D2. Reactionary that I am, it's tough to get away from good old proven 1095, but I suppose I can consider a WWI-era steel to be time-honored as well. I ordered a Queen Muskrat today anyway (fer skinnin'...it will get used if I can manage to fool a coyote or two into rifle range), so now I'll have two D2 knives. First Queens.

That said, if anyone has further thoughts on these two steels, I'd love to hear them.

I have been collecting now for about 3 years. I have learned so much here. I just want to help and pass on a few things when I can.

I am very happy you take note of what I show and have. Thank you for saying this.

Know I have to ask....Do you have any YELLOW handled knives ?

Here is my latest Queen with a crack in it. She looks so hot I just going to leave the crack as is.

Hey Ken, does that yellow Queen have D-2, 1095, or stainless steel blades? I like it with whatever the blades are. Nice knife

They are stainless steel blades with out a scratch on them.

Yes, I have two Moore Makers with yellow Delrin handles, a trapper and a muskrat, both 1095, both Camillus manufacture. Nice knives. In fact, in my initial post to the forum, in Intros, you posted a picture of the Moore Maker muskrat, before I even received it in the mail.

Duffy, if you're going to bid on that, let me know. If you're not, I will but I don't want to bid against another AAPK member.

JO52, do you think less that $50?

I will go on the chopping block and say $52.52 will be a high bid but sure to take her home with that bid.

She is a "It is one of a short run produced", but they not say how short ? My gess is 100 of them.

I have not seen that smooth bone before.

Aww, I think I blew my knife budget already this month...and next month. I'm already bidding on an axe and yet one more Schrade. And I still need to get a hold of Bill Horn to get that mini-trapper.

And, I'm going to be in Olympia this weekend which means .....CABELA'S!!!!!!!!!!

Dan, I know what you mean about there being too much month at the end of the money.

I'm so poor now, that I can't even afford to PAY attention. It's the wifey's CHRISTMAS budgets that ate away my knife & gun buying budgets.

She is alway spending money on things that we don't need, like food, paying the electric bill, insurance for her vehicle, Gasoline, and washing machine soap as well as dish washing soap. Waste, waste, waste, that's all that woman does. Where I, on the other hand, could take that money and buy some really nice knives and guns. Women, I just can't figure them out

Not only soap but toilet paper and shoes. I am sure they should be able to go with out them for a week or 2 each month....
