Camillus #14 - Rogers Bone Experts Care To Weigh In?
Just pull the trigger on the "Buy It Now" option and got this Camillus short-line. Is this Rogers bone?
FYI - I'm looking for a Camillus Shortline #72 with bone in near excellent condition if anyone has one to sell. I have several knives for trade as well. If interested send a PM. Thanks

Yes it is. I have yet to see a 14 in that black synthetic they used in the '40s. I do however have one in that "Brownstag" synthetic they started using in the mid-'50s. I love me some 14's and have a hard time controlling myself when there's a nice one like yours up for sale, especially when it has Rogers bone handles. One of the great things about them is I have yet to run onto one that doesn't have good snap, no matter how old it is. Excellent buy.
You just missed a really nice Rogers bone 72 on ebay. It went for big bucks though. ---> http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vtg-Camillus-US ... 7675.l2557

Jerry, I was watching that one too. It was nice and I figured it would bring good money. All the talk around here has me wanting one.

Wow! We're gonna have to stop all the talk about how wonderful the 72 is. Sheesh!jerryd6818 wrote:Yes it is. I have yet to see a 14 in that black synthetic they used in the '40s. Greg (gsmith7158) had his chicken eye on that one too. I wonder if he was the one that got it. It was too much money for my threadbare pocketbook.montemojo wrote:Jerry, I was watching that one too. It was nice and I figured it would bring good money. All the talk around here has me wanting one.

Jerry, I've noticed kind of a pattern. Seems that when a certain brand or model and certain tang stamp era is popular here makes the values go up on ebay. I could be wrong and it could just be me.

Re: Camillus #14 - Rogers Bone Experts Care To Weigh In?
Thanks, Jerry! I needed me some good news. I knew about that 72 on eBay Saturday afternoon. What I wasn't sure about was the Rogers bone on that one as well! I missed out on it but not by much. I was the one who drove the price up to that amount. I came in second! It was at $23.50 for several days and up to the last minutes when someone (the winner) bid $24.00. I bid $81.17 as time went to almost 0 seconds but the guy who had it at $24 had a reserve too big for me. I wouldn't have gone more if I had to do it over again.
That 72 was almost perfect. I spoke to the seller - an honest guy - and he told me that all blades had a very strong snap, both ways, and looked as if they were unused. No hairline cracks either after examined with a loop. Oh well, maybe next time, huh?
Hello, my name Felix, and I'm a 72 shortline knifeaholic...
..at least until I get one, then it's on to the next one.
I have for trade any one of these, to include a few...
N.I.B. Choice of sheath. This one came with the tan sheath but have another original dyed one to better match the usual burgundy Delrin handles. A scarce 881W Schrade N.Y. U.S.A. L. F. & C. pruner w/ cocobolo handles and almost full blade. In excellent condition for its age but a soft close snap. Open snap is strong and so is the half stop. Circa 1918 Excellent condition with no flaws in craftmanship as with some later Camillus knives... + cash.

That's a great 14 Felix. If I knew about the bone 72 I may have dug a bit out of savings for it, maybe it's good I didn't.

Thank, Paul. I don't have it in my hands yet but the guy said it had strong snaps both ways and no cracks whatsoever. I agree - A 72 in excellent condition, strong gator snaps that Camillus is well known for AND Rogers bone?!?

Felix I saw one from here, one on bladeforums. Both were mint, pretty sure they were different knives. I even had one offered to me, but they decided to keep it. I don't blame them. Bone 72's are a sight to behold.

Re: Camillus #14 - Rogers Bone Experts Care To Weigh In?
I find that as I'm getting older I start losing that fire for desire a lot faster than when I was younger. For example, the 8813 I so much wanted has gone down to less than a simmer. I wanted an 8803 too, - in its place - and even this 72 that I lost out on just this past Saturday, I notice my urge for it slowly slowing down to a simmer as well. But don't get me wrong, if the right one comes along that cooling off
could reignite into a bonfire.
It just depends on the knife itself.

In knife collecting there is always another example just as good, or better, that will come along, sometimes sooner, sometimes later, but it will show.

I've found this to be true in only a few short years of collecting.kootenay joe wrote:In knife collecting there is always another example just as good, or better, that will come along, sometimes sooner, sometimes later, but it will show.

KJ, I agree with you, sir.
Everything has its rhythm and one must find the rhythm in things that we're involved with and flow with it or risk losing in the process. Go too slow and lose out on a deal completely. Go too fast and lose by getting your eyes poked in the process.
By the way, I got the #14 at a pretty awesome "Buy it now" price. It had 7 people watching it but I had to take the time to ask the right questions and wait on a reply before clicking. This one worked out for me and we must be happy with what we have and not be unhappy with what we don't.

You are correct, Monte. It seems that all the knives that I like, buy and show here are going out of my price range. Used to pay $15-20 dollars for them and now are going into the $40-60 and more range. I bid on that short line 72 and almost crapped my pants when it went to $82!!montemojo wrote:Jerry, I've noticed kind of a pattern. TJ, I have put more thought into this and I figure that we are bidding against fellow AAPK members. I wish I knew who else was bidding on that 72. I think there was 8 bidders and I was one of them. If you did then thats 2. I know 2more by just reading this thread.

I was not one of the eight even though I did bid. My bid was eradicated as I placed it. I'm sure we are bidding against fellow AAPKers.

This is very true!
Older knives are like women, they are beautiful, pricey, and rarely do you find the good ones!

Re: Camillus #14 - Rogers Bone Experts Care To Weigh In?
I'm guilty of driving the price up that high but still didn't win.
I bid $81.17 and - as I said earlier in this thread - wasn't going higher than that even if I had to do it over again.
These were my reasons for my high evaluation of that knife:
That 72 was almost perfect. I spoke to the seller - an honest guy - and he told me that all blades had a very strong snap, both ways, and looked as if they were unused. No hairline cracks either after examined with a loop. And it had Rogers bone handles to top it off.
I'm no expert and no where near rich either. I simply wanted it and believed it was worth the $85 (shipping included) as most old knives hold thier value better than the US dollar.

Re: Camillus #14 - Rogers Bone Experts Care To Weigh In?
I thought it was a great knife also. If I collected Camillus exclusively I would have been right there with you . But thats not my goal and I am trying to stay focused . Its hard to do with so many good knives to be had. What makes me loose focus is when I find a good knife for a great price. Then I just cant pass it up.

We should organize, get together on this so as not to bid against each other. Ya think it's possible and will work out for the best? Once done, settle outside eBay somehow, or will some outsider come in and scoop it up and beat us all out at a bargain-basement discount price?
We still don't know who won the bidding war! It could very well still be a fellow AAPKer.
