Stan Shaw, Was It Or Wasn't It?

This Ibberson marked horticulturist's knife sold this week on Ebay for sixty-three dollars and fort-five cents.

An interested bidder did ask the seller if there was anything stamped on the liners. The seller was somewhat chagrined at the query and stated he had never heard of such a thing. But, he did look. There were none.

I suspect there is still a 50/50 chance the knife was made by Stan Shaw. He was known for being the maker of this particular pattern while he was with Ibberson and I think he made them under his own marque, as well.

Somebody got a bargain, even if Shaw didn't make it.

Interesting! I have a very similar knife marked only Hoffritz. I know they didn't manufacture knives but contracted them to others.I wonder if mine is English? Here is a pic.

Hello, Picked this knife up and I dont know if its a Stan Shaw or not. Any and All Help is appreciative!!
Just my thoughts on this knife, as follows. I have seen a few similar to my knife and they were made by Stan Shaw. All of them that I have seen though are Stamped on the inside liners "SS-" and some numbers or letters. Mine is "S-3C" and there could be another "S" that was very lightly stamped next to it,,Hard to tell. I got the best pics I could get. Stamped on the tang of master is G. Ibberson & Co with the Violin. Etched out on the blades are "Marshalls Union Street, Glasgow and on back says "Firth Stainless Throughout". I recall just seeing one recently on ebay that was stamped EO-51 for Edward Osborne. Maybe this knife was an Early Stan Shaw while he was an apprentice for Osborne?? Thanks Guys

Don't know, but Stan Shaw was not the only cutler that ID'd knives they made by marking the liners in some fashion.

Very true Charlie;if you look at a Smith & Wesson model 6060 folder(designed by Blackie Collins) on the inside you will see the model # stamped.

Hey Charlie, Agree totally!! But what really throws me off as mentioned in other threads, The inside Liners are normally date stamped??
