Jerry, I concur with Lawrence, your Puma collection is wonderful. I also like really like the Camillus Coca Cola.

While this is just being nit picky and of course I love seeing them here no matter what the variety, S-K’s Camillus on the last page is a cattle knife (looks to be a nice example of the WWII air corps knife), and your lovely Case Bradford, Farside, is as well (unless Case labeled this as a stockman). I think a defining feature of the stock knife is one with a clip blade as the master. Farside, your case is delightful. I think an appropriate name for it would be a fancy premier (or premium) cattle knife (fancy being the pearl handles, premier being the shape, and cattle knife being the blade arrangement with a spear as the master).

Here are two I got today:
A KA-BAR 1071 mini stockman and a Browning USA stockman with rosewood handles.

Unusual old Case Bradford stockman. All blades are marked, pen has the pattern number 83074

I can't be sure if there is enough serpent teenyness to be a stockman (I think there IS) but I AM sure that I love that knife! Thanks for showing it!

Paul that is a common trait to wartime material shortages.That makes them a bit more rare and historic to me but I don't have any empirical data to back that up. They needed all the brass they could get for shell casings.

I would say both the 98ot and 61ot are bonafide stockmans.

What would define a 'stockman' anyway. Don't think I've ever read anywhere what qualifies a knife to be one. I just always assumed it's a 3 blader on a serpentine frame that has a clip, spey, and sheepsfoot.

And isn't the main blade on the 98, 61, and 897UH considered a muskrat blade and not a clip?

I don't know if there's an official qualification for a stockman, but for me it's a 3 or 4 blade serpentine frame. Doesn't always have to be clip, sheepsfoot and spey. It can be clip, spey and punch or clip sheepsfoot and pen etc. It's the frame style and 3 or more blade combination IMO.

The blade on slim stocks are usually called a california clip. They have many names. Whichever name you prefer it's still technically a clip blade. It may be safe to say a clip blade is mandatory to classify a knife as a stockman as long as the frame is serpentine or gunstock. There may be a couple other appropriate frames but I don't know. Cigar or equal end cattle knives are in the same vein but different, although cattle knife and stockman get interchanged a lot.

Paul, your 8813 is a beauty. There is a story on that particular one which I might tell you someday. Meanwhile, I am going to cheat a little bit, because this one is not old, but it was deliberately made to pay homage to the old ones and I am deeply grateful to own it.
