How To Clean Green Gunk From Schrade Scrimshaw Handle

Post by morestag »

Any advice on how to remove some green tarnish staining from the handle of a scrimshaw? The rest of the knife is mint but there is this one spot of staining because the guy stored it in the sheath. I have tried some mild abrasives (brasso and flitz) and they didn't touch it. Also lightly tried some 0000 steel wool but I think the spot is actually stained and not just on the surface. Any advice is appreciated.

You might try applying a paste made of baking soda and water to the spot, and letting it remain until dry. Hydrogen peroxide may help too, but be warned, you may never restore it to original, and any attempt to remove it may leave a mark of it's own.

If it's meant for me to have it, it'll still be there.

I will post some pictures tomorrow. Hopefully you will be able to see the spot. It is pretty light but it does bother me.
