Samurai WWII ??

I know nothing about these, I think it's called a Samurai. I was told it's a military piece from WWII, it has the right colors for military issue. There are several different names for this type of blade, I think it has something to with the length.
I traded a .22 pistol for it some time ago just because I thought it was cool. Talk about a intimidating weapon! If it is indeed from WWII, I don't want to hear the stories it has to tell.

Hard to photograph something this long.

cool sword. lots of war stories about jap officers wielding those with impunity, but don't take it to great brittain!

Is there an armory mark near the handle. The only one I know is the Tokyo mark, looks like 3 inter-connecting circles in a triangle shape, IIRC.

I have been told that a family history was often written on paper and put in the inside of the handle under the wrappings.

I have also heard of swords being returned to the family that the sword came from because they could trace them by the history. I don't know if it is true or not, just relating what I heard.

IIRC, this applys only to the heirloom thye swords, not the ones issued by the Japanese army

Next time I'm at my Dad's I will try to remember to take a photo of the sword he has. It was given to him by a high school class mate who served with occupation forces in Tokyo after V-J Day. He was in the USMC and had developed a great appreciation for USN Aviators during his time on various islands. So he grabbed a load of swords and gave them to USN Airdales.

Yeah, that mark on the left is the Tokyo, I don't know what the others are.

Sorry to be late joining in on this thread but there is a work of fiction that relates to this subject. I found it to be a worthwhile read and quite entertaining.
The book is THE 47TH SAMURAI by Stephen Hunter. His books are usually well researched, easy to read and entertaining.

I have read all of

his Books. Other Great Story tellers also, are Lee Child, David Morrell

and Vince Flynn.
