Ken, i have read many posts that give 1958-59 as the date for the first 8OT's which had bone handles and came in a real wood box.
The dates you give are later (1960's) but surely you agree that other well established Schrade collectors believe the date is late 1950's ?

I believe the bone was long-gone by 1961.

Every one has their own idea about the bone 8OTs; I sold my first used one, to buy the one I have now [in the wrong box]
I can only go by the information, I have in hard copy.
Schrade's 1959 price list [SW159-j] has the 2OT selling for $27 a dozen - I cannot find any indication they were sold individually.
Schrade's 1960 price list [SW160-J] has the 2OT selling for $27 a dozen - I cannot find any indication they were sold individually.
Schrade's 1961 price list [SW161-J] has both the 2OT and 8OTs selling for $27 a dozen - I cannot find any indication both knives were sold individually.
Schrade's 1962 price list [SW162-J] has the 8OT selling for $27 a dozen - No 2OTs are listed in the price lists after 1961.
I cannot find any indication the 8OTs were sold individually.
Schrade's 1963 price list [SW163-J] has the 8OTs listed as "* Individually Boxed".
All of Schrade's price lists, are dated 1st. January.

With this documented information: We could say the 2OTs were made and sold in 1959 and the 8OTs were made in 1960.
Therefor, by 1959 and 1961, they were being shipped out to distributors all over the U.S.A.
Note:
Schrade's First "Old Timer" was the 2OT.
25 years later [1984] for the Silver Anniversary of the First Old Timer, Schrade produced the Bone handled 34SS in a cedar box.


As the day gose on; Price list SW165-J [1965] lists the 8OT at $2.25 each.
It also lists a "Custom-made 8OT" at $6.75 each.
Belknap has a "Schrade Walden Old Timer" for $7.50. in a price list marked 1970 ? Below is page 16 of Belknap's price list

Note: The "Genuine bone stag." 8OT comes in a "Redwood Box"
The Primbel Schrade Walden knives, are stamped "935" not 8OT.

Now it would be good to hear from one or more of the Schrade collectors who quote late 1950's as the start of the 8OT, to learn what they base this on.

KJ, it is hard to get sound evidence on most Schrade Knives.
If Schrade made 8OTs in the 50's they would have sold them, then.
It looks like Schrade was still making the 8OTs with Bone Handles, and in redwood hinged boxes, in 1970.

2ot was announced at the Dec 1958 sales meeting.
8ot was announced at the Dec 1959 sales meeting.

Obviously the lines introduction were for the following years 1959 and 1960 respectively.

Only definitive evidence I have ever seen of the intro dates other than the catalog and price lists.

Hi Old Mate Dale, there can be no doubt Schrade made 2OTs in 1959, because they started to sell them in 1960.
I do not have a 2OT or have I ever wanted one. Howeve, I have a large collection of 8OTs and have tried to look into their history, before.
What do you think about the Bone Handled 8OTs I found in the 1970 Belknap Cateloge ? Redwood Box and all...Hope all is well... Ken.

Presumably price lists were printed once a year and the information sent to the printer likely about 2 months before the printed lists were received. Depending upon when a new knife was released, it could be a full year before it showed up on the price list.
Are there any shop floor notes or records of knives shipped to wholesalers/retailers from the late 1950's ?

or, "our new 8OT has begun shipping to our retail customers" ?

Exactly what was said about the 8OT in the Dec. 1959 sales meeting likely would answer our question of exactly when it was first released.

The assertion that they were making bone 8OTs in 1970 and sending them in wooden boxes is patently absurd. They sold a FEW bone handle 8OTs possibly a little before and possibly a little after 1960. No more. My guess is that the wooden boxes went ONE TO A DEALER. That is how rare they are. By 1961 absolutely no bone covers were available to any cutlers in the United States except CASE, or at the minimum, no one was using them anymore. The major distributor, Rogers, apparently had a definitive fire about 1958. By the time Delrin was being used by the cutleries, they were desperate for materials. Eric Albers, who has had an inside line on Schrade information for decades, especially through Dave Swinden, said that they even tried Masonite, of all things. Not long before Delrin was adopted, which was very quick after the DuPont factory was built in 1960, Schrade was sending out knives with black, glassine jigged covers which most people might assume was bone. It wasn't celluloid and it is not bone. I have handled these. In this thread is a post by Fat City. It is exact information which you can trust.

I don't think I have shown this one yet. A 1984 25th Anniversary 34OT. Ithe has sterling silver bolsters an shield.

Those 34 OT anniversary knives are really lovely in hand. I think with pocket wear on the bone, patina on the steel, and oxidation in the crevices of the sterling, one would have character unexcelled in an EDC. I wouldn't want to carry one though, unless I had a spare.

Cal the combination of the smooth bone and the sterling silver bolsters really makes a striking appearance. I was really pleased with it.

In a Forum were we [Collectors of Schrade knifes] ,are looking for sound informatioon regarding the First 8OTs, words like:
"absurd" "My guess" "possibly" "It is exact information witch you can trust". do not help.

What is absurd about the Largest Hardware Company in the world, Belknap [at the time] selling Schrade-Walden Bone Handled 8OT knives, in redwood boxes, in 1970.
I have in my hand, my mint Schrade-Walden 8OT with Saw-cut Bone handles. When was it made? 1961 or 1969
Fat City has confermed, Schrade made an 8OT with Bone Handles and sold them in 1960-61:
A friend in the U.S. sent me the flyers for the 2OT shown in its' box [with Smove Bone Handles].
The flyer shows the 8OT with "Bone handles" can't determan if they are Saw-cut.
Todate, I have not seen anything that confermes if the Bone Handles were Saw-cut or Smove Bone [like the 2OTs I have seen].

That 8OT Sterling is a beauty. I see one here on feebay that is tempting. IMO, the 8OT is the small block Chevy of the knife world, and one of my all time favorites.

Gwelker62 that's a 34OT the only pattern that had the sterling silver bolsters and shield.
The following year a collector series was made that inclued the 8OT, 34OT and one other pattern but these had a different shield and no sterling silver bolsters.

I started cruising ebay for collectible knives in 2007. There were lots of Schrade USA knives listed, used ones and new in the box ones. Most days saw 10-20 listings complete(close). There was lots to choose from and if you got outbid, not a concern because another example would soon get listed.
Now 'Folding Knives' search on ebay brings up mostly imported knives and Schrade USA knives are almost rare. For people beginning their Schrade collecting now, it can be a long wait to find the knives you need and then more bidding competition to get it.
What happened is that all those earlier listed Schrades got snapped up by people like me who are hoarding hundreds to thousands of Schrade knives. But wait, as we die off our heirs will list them, and a plethora of Schrade knives will be unleashed.
