[PA Knives]

Ok Class, I thought that this might be of interest to some of you. Here is an ebay link to a knife that is considered quite collectable.

Those of you that are new to this hobby may look at this minty knife and think WOW! I want one of those old timers. Here is where your education comes in. First, READ THE KNIFE, lets evaluate that.
1. looks awefully clean, HUMM most knives were bought to use, but not all
2. wonder if that is real tortise shell? HUMM, did Kane Cutlery use this materail?
3. Kane is directly related to CASE so is this pattern consistent?
4. The blades don't seem to be similar to other canoes from this period.
5. The seller says that it was made by "Kane Cultery" must be old then, becuase they haven't been in business since early 1900's?
6. Gosh, the one picture shows a small "GERMANY" on it, did Kane have knives made in germany?
7. wonder what the pins are made of and what the liners are?
8. wonder if anyone else has seen one of these.
9. Maybe I should ask the gang on the allaboutpocketknives forum about it.
10. Maybe this knife is a reproduction made in the 90's by Parker whom bought this name and many others and new comers are being fooled into thinking that it is an old knife at a great price!!!!!!!!

The seller isn't cheating anyone and I don't want to bad mouth them at all. The lesson is to not just look at the stamp and open up your wallet. READ THE DARN KNIFE 1st, ask questions and then only buy it when you are sure of what you got.

I will entertain any questions now, Bryan, no sleeping in class just because you already knew this! You can clean the chalk board, "I suppose they don't use those anymore either.

Somebody gave the Seller an email regarding Kane.

Did Kane actually made any knives?
I run across their straight razors every so offen, but never seen any older knives.

I was told/read Case even made made those, the razors that is.

Parker had tons of this kind of stuff made by the Olbertz factory in Solingen in the 1980's and 1990's. A lot of them were marked Northfield Knife Company too.

I see more of the newer "Kinfolks" than any of them. Or at least one pattern I am interested in.

Yes Kane Cutlery was a separate company at the turn of the Century. Jean Case bought company, a fire hurt the business very much. It was reopened but didn't last long, it was then run by Hollingsworth and eventurally Albertson. This is the extremely short version of a very long story that I will have in the Pennsylvania knife book, when I get it done. I have to complete the one I am doing now first though. Good question. I don't believe that Kane made razors. A jobber known as Brown Razor Co. from Little VAlley. A grandson of Job Case made razors there and in Tidioute. This is a portion of the book I am writing now. Man it seems the CASE family was in everything in one way or another. I found some amazing things out that have yet to be reported in print. I am really excited about it. Class dismissed? Oh wait the bell hasn't rung yet> Here is a photo of a great Albertson I own.
